So very sad to come across this obituary - I was in the process of looking up your office number in order to stop in to say hello during a trip to NC later this Spring.
Bob, you were so very kind and encouraging to me back in 1990 when you were the wise senior medicine resident stuck supervising this extremely green, awkward 4th year medical student during an ICU rotation at UNC.
Brilliant, patient, wickedly funny - you always made me look good in front of the attending and feel like I was an important part of the team.
Oh so fun to run into you again at a conference years later when I had become a nephrologist too.
A life not nearly long enough, but lived to the fullest.
You've set a very high bar for the rest of us.
Thank you for being one of my mentors.

I just found out. My condolences to his family. I knew him when he was getting his Pharm D at UNC Chapel Hill. I was an undergrad pharmacy student then, and he encouraged me to get my Pharm D which I eventually did. He was a wonderful lecturer and person. He made me laugh, and he had a great smile. My deepest sympathy.

Dr. Schmidt was the primary Nephrologist for my best friend, Stephen Ciraulo. He was always kind and patient with Steve, but also took time to be supportive of those who cared for Steve. He was a marvelous and thoughtful physician, and a remarkable human being. I send my condolences to his family, co-workers and friends. He was truly a blessing in our lives.

Dr. Schmidt is the best Dr. I ever had!. In 200l, he diagnosed rare Conn's Syndrome, which was making my BP sky-high, ordered adrenal vein sampling, and arranged for surgery to fix the problem. And it did! The surgeon told me that Dr. Schmidt's diagnosis likely added 10 years to my life! After the surgery I gave Dr. Bobby a card with the following accolades:
Dedicated
Researcher.
Super
Caring
Healer
Most
Impressive
Diagnostician
TotallyAwesome!
Dr. Schmidt, thank you for taking such great care of me and for all the years I might not have had with my grandchildren! I will never forget you! Forever your Number One Fan!

I'm so sorry for your loss. Dr. Schmidt was my mother's doctor, whom she respected and loved. Our family appreciated all his hard work, and all he did for her. Dialysis is so hard on patients, but Dr. Schmidt was such an inspiration to everyone he met. He will be missed.

So sorry for your loss. Dr. Schmidt was one of the best doctors I have ever known. On one occasion, I did not want to go to the hospital. He met me at the admissions department and walked me back. He would come and visit me in the hospital even on his day off. He was truly an amazing man.

A young energetic young man that I enjoyed seeing when I instructed. Drove me nuts how hard and quiet he would work on his part marching playing his instrument then I would give him the time to ask me questions. WOW. I could just see the seeds of good things in his heart and with much hope for future expectations. I followed him at a distance and watched his growth...such REAL love and honesty and trying. Just so wonderful.

While I was at Duke awaiting my transplant, Dr. Bob was an inspiration to all of us. He made us all push harder. People are put in our lives for a reason. I feel blessed to have had him in mine. Rest in peace and breathe easy Dr. Bob.

Wonderful man! Always had a smile on his face. Laughing is the best medicine and he taught me that. I bring this philosophy to my own patients as a nurse. So sorry for your lost and I pray that God gives you comfort in that he is now spreading his love in heaven.
