Mr. Robert William THOMPSON

Robert William "Bobby" Thompson, 59, of Chattanooga, Tennessee went to be with Jesus on September 8, 2017. He was born April 8, 1958 in Cleveland, Tennessee to the late William R. "Bobby" Thompson and mother Mary Lou Summar Thompson. Bobby was a lifetime resident of Chattanooga, Tennessee. He attended Cleveland High School where he was a shot put/ discus state champion with teammate and fellow Blue Raider Paul Davis. The two man team accumulated enough event points and they won the TSSAA Team State Track and Field Championship in 1977, with his father Bobby Thompson, Sr. as their coach. Bobby's athletic ability achievements led him to earning a full football scholarship to play for the University of Tennessee Knoxville under Coach Bill Battle. Bobby later enlisted in The United States Army where he received an Honorable Discharge. Later in life Bobby worked for Bowater in Calhoun, Tennessee where he was employed for twelve years. He is preceded in death by his uncle, Lt. Gen. James E. Thompson. He is survived by his mother, Mary Lou Summar Thompson; siblings, Terinda Kim (Joe) Depew, Tammie Kay (Steve) Smith and Brian Kenyon Thompson; aunts and uncles, Nat S. and Sissy Thompson, Patti Thompson; nieces and nephews, Ashley Elizabeth (Brian) Smedley, Emily Elizabeth Thompson, Abbey Elizabeth Brewton, Campbell Mae Thompson, Conner Matthew Smedley, William Brooks Thompson and Elizabeth Reese Smedley; cousins, Robert and Natalie Pearce, Nat S. Thompson, Jr., Tara and Steve Stevens and James E. Thompson, Jr.; loving friends, Paul Davis, Rev. Sterling Jetton, Samantha McCaleb and loving pet "Baby Dog". A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2017 from 4 pm to 8 pm at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel. A visitation will be held on Monday, September 11, 2017 from 1 pm to 3 pm with a Celebration of Life Service following at 3 pm. Burial will be private. The family would like to express their love and appreciation to all the staff at Memorial Hospital (downtown) in CCU and the Emergency room staff.
