Sidney Fontenot Obituary

In 1929, in Allen Parish, in a little community called Soileau, too small to rate a mention on the map, Sidney Fontenot was born to F.E. and Leona Fontenot.
"Even as a little boy, he was always the good one," said one of his first cousins. "He used to go up to his teachers at the end of the year and tell them, 'If I've done anything bad, I'm very sorry'."
He fell in love with God as a child. Nobody was much surprised that he wanted to be a preacher.
He had to find his spiritual way from where he started to where he ended. In his maturity he simplified Christianity, "The Christian life is an easy life." He started every day with a simple prayer, a surrender of the gift back to the Giver, kept the conversation up all through the day, and at day end, like he did as a little boy, he prayed before bed, "If there's anything I did that displeased You I am sorry."
He reached wider than any of us know. He married and buried, prayed for and prayed with, counseled, hugged and smiled, said the right thing in the right way at the right time to so many.
He was never lukewarm. Piling the days up, over eight decades, he let the Holy Spirit transform him into a walking, talking Fruit of the Spirit. He is the Christian-ish Christian most of us will ever know.
The Rev. Sidney Fontenot passed away at 6:30 p.m.on Friday Jan. 9, 2015 at home, in a room thick with love, with family and friends united around his bed. He was 85. His wife and two stillborn children preceded him in death.
He and his wife Delores raised three children, R. Pierre Fontenot, Mark Fontenot and his wife Lois, and Debbie McCormick and her husband Mark.
He's the spiritual patriarch affectionately known as "Poppy" to eight grandchildren: Dwight, Quintin, Kadie, Devan, Christopher, Chase, Bryce and Pierce; and six great-grandchildren, Vincent, Aiden, Imrye, Arley, Roman and Ritchie.
He now knows what it's like to hear Him say, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
His funeral will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, January 13, in Maplewood First Baptist Church. Dr. Ronnie Burke will officiate. Burial will be in Green Oaks Cemetery between Kinder and Oberlin at 2:30 p.m.
Visitation will be held in the church on Monday from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service in the church. In lieu of flowers, the family offers the option of sending support for Partners in Missions, 1072 Laura Circle, Sulphur, LA 70663, a non-profit ministry the couple founded in the 1970s.

Rev Fontenot was my pastor during my adolescence years. He and brother Lon Roger´s were both very much a part of my becoming a follower of Christ Jesus. I know these two are in Heaven today and I so look forward to meeting them when I die. Add to these two faithful men of Christ my dear grandmother who brought me to church when I was young. Without my grandmother I would have been a lost soul .

Dear Debbie and the entire family, I have just now learned of Mr. Sidney's passing. There are no excuses to present. Time slipped away from me, and the opportunity to visit with someone very special before he left this world is now gone. What a wonderful man who set a wonderful example, and taught me so many things. I have been attempting to live up to "The Fonteneaux's Arts and Frames" standards set forth by Sidney and Delores. I was so fortunate to be able to have the opportunity to carry on their business when they decided to retire. I know Mr. Sidney was proud of me for continuing the business. He once told me that God somehow positions people where they need to be, and sets them to do what they do well. He then said to me, smiling, "And, it is obvious that God put you exactly where you shine". I am so sorry that I did not get to see him one last time. He had such a great influence on me. Thanks to Mr. Sidney, I love and enjoy what I do everyday. May God Bless Always, M. Dawn Harrington

To Randy and all the Fontenot family. You have my deepest sympathy. Brother Fontenot was a great man of God. He was very inspirational in my childhood growing up in Oberlin. He baptized me in the black water of the Calcasieu river. I still read his inspirational messages in the paper. I hope they continue. Surely he knows what it's like to hear. "Well done my good and faithful servant. "

Brother Sidney was such a tender-hearted, loving Pastor. For many years he published a short, inspirational message in the newspaper. I encouraged him to save those messages and one day publish them in a book. Many years later I had a wonderful surprise. When we attended his 80th birthday celebration, he held in his hands a copy of his newly published book containing a collection of his devotional messages from years past! He presented me with a signed copy of his book that day. His legacy will continue to live on in my heart.

I'm lighting this candle in memory of the most humble, Godly man I ever met. His love of the Lord was obvious to all he met. He truly "walked his talk." While his "light" will be missed here, Heaven is much brighter today.

I am so sorry to hear of Rev. Fontenot's passing. I did not know him, but like so many others, knew him from his newspaper writings,of which I have read many.

He was solid, and it was good to read of his early life.

Only God knows the good he did in the salvation and encouragement of many through his articles.

Such a dedicated servant of God. It's been since the 60's since I have been in contact with Brother Fontenot. As a child I will never forget his teachings as I sat in church with my grandmother Hilda Patrick. I'm sure he and Hilda are rejoicing in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I so look forward to seeing them both again, for they were both such an inspiration to me!
