Thomas Yost Obituary

Yost Thomas L. Yost, 62, of Gahanna, died peacefully Saturday, November 8, 2014 surrounded by family, after struggling valiantly with leukemia and complications of aggressive treatment he embraced in hopes of a cure. Tom loved and was loved by many who mourn his loss, including his high-school sweetheart and wife of 40 years, Mary; daughter and son-in-law, Mandy and Andy Hickey; grandsons, Dodge and Logan Hickey, all of Gahanna; son, Ben Yost of Ocean Springs, MS; and brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Pam Yost of Blacklick. He also is survived by mother-in-law, Margaret Mock; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ann and Mike Mancuso, Rick Mock and his friend, Susan Schwab, Joy and Jim Brown and Margene and Brad Power; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents Bill and Viv Yost and father-in-law Gene Mock. Tom was a proud Civil War re-enactor with The Fighting 5th Kentucky and Byrnes Battery, a member of the Mustang Club of Ohio and a retired Gahanna Police lieutenant. He was an avid history buff-especially the War for Southern Independence-and an expert on many aspects of the Battle of Gettysburg, whose hallowed ground he visited several times a year. He will be marching in spirit this coming weekend with his fellow re-enactors during Remembrance Weekend celebrations. Tom was an avid OSU Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns fan. His many interests included boating at Buckeye Lake and cooking-especially soups. Family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, November 13, 2014 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd. Memorial service celebrating Tom's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 14, 2014, and family will also receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Friday at St. John's Evangelical Protestant Church of the United Church of Christ, 59 E. Mound St. Pastor Virginia Lohmann Bauman officiating. The Yost family wishes to thank the many nurses, physicians and patient care assistants of the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center for their diligent medical care and Pastor Gini for her loving pastoral care, including bedside services in Tom's final minutes. Tom's life may be celebrated with contributions to St. John's Church, 59 E. Mound St., Columbus, OH, 43215, or the Gettysburg Foundation, P.O. Box 4629, Gettysburg, PA, 17325. I shall miss sitting around ye old campfire, sipping on tongue-tingling liquid spirits, and sharing stories of the past! Tom touched lives wherever he went - he dressed up in his Confederate Gray and helped me with a Civil War Presentation at Ohio Dominican University. Tom shall always be in my thoughts and in my heart! May the Lord Wrap you, Mary, and your family, With His Loving Arms!
