Timothy Smith Obituary

Timothy A. Smith

Phoenix Timothy Arthur Smith entered heaven on January 4, 2018 after a courageous battle against heart failure. He was born on February 19, 1950 in Chicago, IL to Harold and Mary Smith. In 1959, his family moved to Phoenix. Tim was an All-American football player for St. Mary's High School, class of 1968. His football career continued at Glendale Community College and Northern Arizona University. He then was hired by the Phoenix Fire Department and served for 33 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sandra Fotinos (Tony). He is survived by his wife, Betsy, his children, Jamie Davis (Gregg), Seth Jenners (Becky), Carmi Stein (TJ) and his brother, Matt Smith (Mary). He loved his 10 beautiful grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Through his strong faith, Tim became a dedicated servant of the Lord, tirelessly helping those in need. Tim made an impact on everyone he met. We will miss his stories and the laughter he gave us all. Tim's life will be celebrated this Saturday, January 13, 2018, at 10 am at Living Streams Church, 7000 N. Central Avenue. Please visit www.shadowmountainmortuary.com for additional information. Tim was a good friend at Catalina in 1960. We had 2 Tim Smiths. Our teacher called him Timmy. He hated it! We lifted weights most days after school in the converted carport to weight room. I'm sorry Betsy to not meet you at Tim's service. I drove down from Prescott, but could not get near the church. TI'm was a great friend in elementary school. I'll miss him.

Tim was a born leader and a great friend and mentor to so many. His football days at St. Marys are legendary, but he left us a long-standing legacy of love, friendship, community service and a wonderful family. On behalf of the entire Bayham family, you will be missed, Tim.

Tim, as you can see, Betsy, and your big Family, your Fire D. Friends, your St. Mary's Friends, your NAU Waybackjacks, and your Church, really poured out their love for you, Sat., at your Celebration of life! People came from near and far, and many sent their love to you and Betsy, and the Family. We all felt a special happiness in seeing you honored.
You have been one of those people who took time, to really care about, and try to help, a friend, or Family Member, and there are so many!
We are thankful to have ridden the bumpy road of life with you, and Betsy, Tim, and until we meet again, you will be in our thoughts, and you will be missed.
We love you, Tim!

I have known Tim since 1975. I was one of the general contractors Tim worked for when he was not working for the fire department. He helped me on my concrete jobs when ever I needed help. there were always great stories about the calls he went on to help people as a fireman. He was always in good spirits when I saw him. Tim was a really good guy. I will miss him.

I had not seen Tim for some time until I saw him and Betsy at an NAU Tailgate this past football season. He shared a heart warming story with me about a grandson that was at school when the teacher asked if any family members had ever talked to a famous or important person. His grandson replied "my Grandpa talks to God". The teacher somehow had expressed some concern about the student being told that. When Tim heard about the teachers concern, he told his grandson (and I think maybe the teacher too) "I do in fact do talk to God, every day in prayer!". What a great person Tim was..so simple, honest and down to earth. He will be missed.

I am sending condolences, prayers, and the angels of love and light to Betsy, Jamie & Gregg, Seth & Becky, Carmi & TJ all Tim and Betsy's beautiful grandchildren and extended family. Tim had the noble traits of sincerity, kindness and understanding which would shine out through his eyes whenever he would speak to you. He was always ready and willing to offer help to others through physical work, counseling and support, and as a firefighter. He was a strong man and a gentle man and a family man. It was a blessing to know him. He will be missed. God has called home one of his angels! Tim was a true and faithful servant of the Lord.

#40 was the greatest football player St Mary's High ever had . As a child I watched him rip thru the field in '66 & '67, the turnaround years after a 5 year dry spell. We didn't quite make it in '66 (lost 34-0 to Tucson) but in '67 perhaps one of the most legendary teams in Arizona high school football history went 13-0 and became a dynasty. Say hello to coach Doherty up there, Tim.
