Peter V. Gugliuzza, M.D.

Dr. Peter V. Gugliuzza, 97, a Naples resident since 1994, passed away on July 20, 2009 at Avow Hospice in Naples, FL. He was raised in Brooklyn, NY and graduated from Niagara University in Niagara Falls, NY. He received his medical training at the Long Island College of Medicine, now known as the College of Medicine, State University New York Health Science Center of Brooklyn, from which he graduated in 1938. He completed his post graduate medical training in 1942 and served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Army until 1946. He practiced internal medicine in Queens, NY and in 1966, served as president of the Medical Society of the County of Queens. He was diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL in 1973 and continued the practice of internal medicine with a staff position at Holy Cross Hospital until 1977 when he retired from the practice of medicine.
Peter was a wonderful dancer, loved playing card and enjoyed traveling and dining out.
In 1994 Peter and his wife, Maria Gertrude, moved to Naples to be near their daughter and son-in-law.
Peter was the beloved husband of 68 years of Maria Gertrude Gugliuzza and much loved and respected father of Donna M. Owen. In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by his sisterin-law, Stacia DeNicola of Pompano Beach, FL; many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and the "great greats." He had the love and support of many wonderful family members and friends. Special thanks are given to nephew, Dr. Kenneth L. Geoly, his wife, Bernie and their family for the continuous devotion and affection through the years. Also, Erica Nicole Owen's frequent visits to Florida in years past remain special memories.
He was recently predeceased by his son-in-law and dear friend, Richard H. Owen. He was also predeceased by many loved and missed in-laws.
A memorial Mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 625 111th Avenue North, Naples, FL 34108 on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute in his name to Avow Hospice, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105.
