Barbara Middaugh Obituary

Barbara Jan O'Brien Middaugh, 53 VISTA -- Our loving angel passed away on January 27, 2012 after a courageous 27 month battle with cancer. Though cancer claimed her body, it never defeated her spirit. She was born in Riverside, California on September 11, 1958 to John and Frances O'Brien. She graduated from UC Riverside with honors in 1980, and from USD Law School in 1985. She began working for the North County Court as a staff attorney in February, 1991. She was an invaluable member of the Vista Court family. She was positive, upbeat, funny, spiritual and attuned and empathetic to the travails of others, usually to the exclusion of her own. She reminded others by her example to ignore the rain and to look to the rainbow. She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Ken Middaugh; sons, Brien (21) and Zachary (17); mother, Frances O'Brien; sisters, Patti DeRenzo, Judy Marshall, and Kathy Davis; and a host of loving family members and dear friends. She was loved by many, and is greatly missed. Memorial services will be held at 11:30 am, Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012 at North Coast Church, 2405 North Santa Fe Avenue, Vista, CA. Barbara's first office in the Escondido Court was just down the hall, next to the Marshal's Dept. She took great pride in decorating her new space with a plush, colorful throw rug in front of her desk. She was even allowed to have a larger office than the Manager! It was here that she would access the many on-line legal services and reference materials to assist the Court with its research projects. Judges and clerks alike enjoyed her professionalism, competence and friendly personality. It was my pleasure to know and see her at work for many years. My sympathy goes out to her family and many friends who will miss her.

Just want you to know that I am so sorry for your loss - all of our loss. But know that Barbara is now a treasure stored up for you in heaven. I remember when she first started with the courts, such a thorough job she did on everything. And always with a great attitude and a smile. You can be proud of her and the way she lived her life.

I will always remember the time - and patience - you took to teach me about Lawbook and all the little legal questions I pestered you with. Thanks, Barb.
