Bernie was born in the Bronx, NY, the youngest of seven children of John Joseph Durkin and Catherine Marren Durkin of Curry, County Sligo, Ireland. Bernie worked his way through both Fordham Preparatory School and Fordham University, Rosehill Campus, graduating in 1953 with a BA in French. He was then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant managing several anti-aircraft Batteries in Queens, NY during the Korean War. He was initially employed by the Greybar Electric Company in NY but spent the bulk of his career with different divisions of the Avnet Corporation, primarily the Irving W. Rice Corporation, as Vice President and Sales Manager.
For a number of years he was active in the National Bed, Bath and Linen Association, serving as President in the mid 1970's. Upon retirement, he moved to New Bern, North Carolina where he pursued many of his passions, particularly carpentry and construction - working on numerous Habitat for Humanity home builds. Bernie was active in many civic and cultural organizations, some of which he helped found, relating to his interests in bicycling, Irish Culture, music and Catholic education. While in Bedford, NY, many remember his presence leading the annual tradition of Christmas Carols on the Village Green. He was an active and devoted member of St. Patrick's Church in Bedford, NY and of St. Paul church in New Bern, NC. In the latter he sang with both the Chancel Choir and the Gospel Choir, served Mass every Friday morning for 15 years at the historic St. Paul church in downtown New Bern and regularly tutored at St. Paul School. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and loved his adopted city of New Bern.
Bernie was fortunate to share 56 loving years with his wife, Adele McCooey Durkin. He is also survived by his four children, Mary Durkin Romano, her husband Michael Romano of Danbury, CT; Frances Xavier Durkin and her husband T. Stevens Spruth of Minneapolis, MN; Timothy Durkin of Dallas, Texas and Deirdre Durkin Clifford and husband Robert Clifford of Brussells, Belgium; seven grandchildren, Brian, Meghan and Melanie Romano, Henry and John Barthley Spruth, Adele and Patrick Clifford. Mr. Durkin is also survived by a sister, Kitty Durkin Flood of Staten Island, NY.
Services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at St. Paul Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Josephs's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 pm Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Cotten Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be greatly appreciated by St. Paul Historical Building Fund to maintain the downtown church, North Carolina's oldest Roman Catholic Church (1821). Checks should be payable to St. Paul Catholic Church ref: Old St. Paul Preservation 3005 Country Club Rd., New Bern, NC 28562.

Ev and I wish we could be with you at this sad time. We will surely miss Bernie, who so long and well held the position of family director and advisor. He never let a teaching moment go to waste. His was a life well-lived, every moment.

Dear Adele,
I am the oldest child of Pierre and Marie-Claude and have lived in the U.S. with my husband Paul for the past 24 years (we have 6 American children!). My fondest memory is of you and your daughters wearing magnificent hats on Sunday at church in Bedford. As a little girl I found your elegance extremely impressive! What a beautiful way to give glory to God.
May your dear husband rest in peace. Eternal joy grant unto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him.
We are off to Ocracoke on a camping trip.
Love & prayers, Armelle

To Adele, Francie and all of the Durkin family,
I remember Bernie from our days growing up in Bedford. Francie and I are still good friends today for which I am grateful. My father passed away this year as well at the ripe old age of 91. My thoughts are with you all at this time. Laurie Mayers (Stockbridge, Hampshire, U.K.)

Dear Adele and Family,
We are shocked beyond words. He popped up in our lives in so many ways. A quality gentleman who could have gone to Cornell had he not chosen Fordham. Oh, I can hear Bernie now. Our love to you all.

Mrs. Durkin and family, Mr. Durkin was a wonderful man and I am very sorry to hear about your loss. I met him at BB&T and he always would share wonderful stories about you and your children with me. He inspired me to never give up on my education no matter how old I was and to never settle for second best. I know that you and your family will be consoled by your memories. God Bless.

Mrs Durkin, You'll never know the extent of your influence on those around you, especially to those of us who grew up in St Patrick's community in Bedford, NY. You and Mr D have always had a special place in the lives of the Anderson family. I only wish we could be there during your time of grief.
May God bless your family during this time.

Bernie and Adele were our cherished neighbors in New Bern. Adele, Bernie was the first visitor to our home on Virginia Ave! Also, he always helped us out whenever we needed anything. He saved me from a hot water flood by simply coming over (immediately) and turning off my hot water heater; he fixed Kate's basketball goal after the floods. What a dear, special man. We've missed you both since our move. With love, Peggy, Bryant and Kate
