Hayden was born on May 15, 1941, the daughter of the late Kenneth Raynor Jones II and Helen Hodges Jones.
She graduated from New Bern High School in 1959 and attended Peace College in Raleigh, NC and Charlotte College, now UNC Charlotte.
Hayden was the regional library secretary for the Craven-Pamlico-Carteret Regional Library with headquarters at the New Bern-Craven County Library for 50 years. The library board of trustees honored her for her 50 years of dedicated service by naming the library auditorium the Hayden H. Jones Auditorium in February of this year.
She was a devout member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Vanceboro, N.C. serving on the vestry a number of years and a member of the board of the Friends of the New Bern-Craven County Public Library. She was also a long time blood donor to the American Red Cross Services as she knew how important it was to help save a life.
Hayden will be remembered for always giving of herself and thinking of others. She was a very special person who made a beautiful difference in many lives.
She is survived by her brother Kenneth Raynor Jones III and niece Kathryn Jones Marcom, both of Garner, N.C.; nephew Kenneth R. Jones IV of Clayton, N.C.; and cousins Julia Guion Mitchell, David L. Ward, Jr. and John A.J. Ward, all of New Bern.
The family is grateful to the many friends, neighbors and caregivers who have given her love and support during her illness, to Dr. Kenneth Wilkins, to Dr. Rick Gorman and his compassionate staff, and to her nurses at CarolinaEast Medical Center for their skill and compassion.
A memorial service celebrating Hayden's life will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at Christ Episcopal Church with the Reverend Marquita L. Hutchens, Associate Rector, conducting the service. The family will greet friends after the service in the Ministry Center across Middle Street. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery Extension.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New Bern-Craven County Public Library, the Salvation Army, Drawer E, New Bern, NC 28563 or the National Pancreatic Foundation, 3962 South Delaware St., Englewood, CO 80110.

I sent word of Hayden's passing to her dear friend, Cora Ulrich, in Argentina. I haven't heard back from her yet. She may be out in the country away from her computer. I am so glad to have known Hayden and am sorry I did not know of her illness. My deepest sympathy to all of her family and friends. Hayden was such a lovely lady.

Hayden and I met in the early 1990s in a wood carving class and became friends as we struggled with trying to learn the art of turning small blocks of wood into life-like birds. Hayden was a most kind and giving person. I do not think she ever met a stranger. She was a very special person who touched so many lives. She was a good friend, and like so many others, I will miss her.

I was fortunate that I passed Aunt Hayden's dish washing test when I was being introduced to the Scheele family by the youngest of the "Scheele girls". As a result, I was lucky enough to marry Kelly. Kelly, our daughter Margaret Ann, and I will always have a special place in our hearts for Aunt Hayden. Holidays in New Bern will never feel the same. I doubt we'll ever really fill that middle seat at the table, no matter how big the Scheele family becomes.

I had the pleasure of working with Hayden in the 1990s and of "bumping into" her on many occassions since. She was one of the most dedicated, honest, and pleasant people I have ever known. My deepest sympathies to her family and to the rest of us who knew her. She will be greatly missed.

From the day I arrived in New Bern and she met me and my family with a basket of warm muffins, through the 15 years we worked side by side at the library and she was my "right hand", to the last visit we had on June 30, Hayden's strength, grace and, above all, faith was always shining bright. She was my assistant and the heart of the CPC Regional Library System, but most of all she was my beloved friend. She loved my family and never missed a birthday--including those of my parents and parents-in-law. She cried with me when I lost my parents and my brother, she rejoiced with me when my children were married and when my 2 grandson were born. To say I loved her just doesn't say enough--she changed my heart and because of her I am a better person than I was when she met me with muffins. Thank you, Hayden for being a living example of what God would have us do with our lives. The world is a better place because of you and to contemplate the world without you in it, is almost beyond bearing. I wish I could have seen your face when you met Jesus and he showed you to your mansion. It is surely among the grandest in Heaven. I will miss you for as many day as I have left and I look forward to our reunion with Sweetpea and Sandy and we can just walk with our little dogs and catch up. Rest in peace and walk in joy my dear friend.

Hayden was a very true person. She always had a smile and a good word for you. She had a way of building you up when you were down. She didn't realize how special she was and how much her friends and acquaintences really loved her. A strong lady who fought the good fight. Rest in Peace , Hayden. You deserve it! I had the pleasure to meet Ms. Hayden Jones as her Pharmacist. Even when she was feeling sick, she managed to take care of herself and be so nice. Rest in peace,
Claudia O'Malley.

Hayden was a special person, always a big smile, a joke or story, a card on a special occasion. But most of all she taught me what it is to be a good neighbor. Like all that knew her, we are going to miss her terribly.

Hayden was the essence of library service always seeking excellence and demonstrated a love and passion for her chosen career. I learned much from her just by watching her daily at the library 1993-1999.
She will be missed.

I will never forget the many conversations I had with Hayden regarding the annual displays of native American artifacts I set up in the library each fall. My wife Bee also enjoyed serving on the library Board, and the time she got to spend talking with Hayden. Bee and I will both miss her so much. To both of us the library will always seem a little lonely without Hayden's enthusiasm, smiling face and calm, relaxing presence within it's walls.

It was an honor to have worked with Hayden for 31 years. She was more than a co-worker...she was family. Hayden was a true inspiration, and she taught me the meaning of the word "dedication." I will strive to serve our community with commitment and integrity as Hayden did in her 48 years of employment. Condolences are sent to all those that loved Hayden Hodges Jones.
