Jeremy Garrett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 24 to Jun. 25, 2011.
Jeremy Germaine Garrett
HENDERSON — Funeral services for Jeremy Germaine Garrett, 30, of Tatum, will be noon today, June 25, 2011, at Tatum High School Auditorium in Tatum. Interment will be in Mapps Cemetery in Tatum, with Pastor Eric Love, the Rev. Everigister Adams, the Rev. J.T. Davis and the Rev. Bernard Gray officiating. Arrangements are by Southern Funeral Home. Mr. Garrett was taken to be with our Lord on June 18, 2011.
He was born November 19, 1980, in Henderson, Texas, to W.F. Garrett and Brenda Garrett. Jeremy united with the Original Zion Baptist Church in Tatum, Texas, at an early age. He later re-dedicated his life to the Lord and joined New Birth Fellowship Church in Kilgore, Texas, on April 24, 2011.
Jeremy was a 1999 graduate of Tatum High School, where he participated in numerous sports and was a member of the Tatum Eagles state runners up football team in 1996. He obtained Associates of Arts and Science degrees from Kilgore College, Panola College and Tyler Jr. College, where he also played tackle on the 2001 National Junior College Championship football team. Jeremy later earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville in 2007. He was the owner and operator of Garrett's Trucking Co. in Tatum, Texas.
Jeremy, known by his friends as "Money," was a very caring individual who lived his life to the fullest. He was friend to many because of his caring and loving attitude. He never met a stranger and touched the lives of everyone he met. His laughter filled you with joy because you knew he was a genuinely happy person. His generosity for giving to those in need will never be forgotten. Jeremy made great impressions on the youth who he often counseled to be the best individuals they could be because the decisions they make could affect their lives in the future.
Family structure was important to Jeremy. He loved spending time with all his family and friends. He also found great joy in spending time with his fiancée and taking his sons to various sporting events in which they participated. He was a devoted father, son and friend and will be missed by all whose lives he touched.
He is survived by his mother, Brenda (Bobby) Chumley; his father, W.F. (Shirley) Garrett, all of Tatum, Texas; his fiancée, Stacy Wilkins of Longview, Texas; sons, Shay Rodgers and Demonte Boyd, both of Tatum, Texas, and Kentrell Brazzell of Longview, Texas; one brother, Stacy (Nancy) Garrett of Longview, Texas; stepbrother and stepsister, André Williams and Dominique Dews of Kilgore, Texas; niece, Makyla Garrett of Longview, Texas; aunts, Louise Hendrix, Christine Hooper, Debbie Garrett and Garlene (Sherman) Horton, all of Tatum, Texas, and Gloria (Evett) Lewis of Henderson, Texas, Linda (Gilbert) Bishop, Jean Garrett and Mary Garrett, both of Longview, Texas; uncles, Lewis Peterson and Amos Peterson, both of Dallas, Texas, Charles Peterson, Jimmy Peterson, Lonnie (Macy) Shelton, Jerome (Emmie) Garrett, all of Longview, and Roger (Ruby) Garrett of Tatum, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Active pallbearers will be Dwayne Sammons, Ezel Smith Bernard Brooks, Fredrick Wilkins, Everett Lewis, Erick Hewitt, Chris Moore and Ronald Darden.
Honoray pallbearers will be Corey Hodge, Roderick Garrett, Stacey Garrett, Jason Hendrix, Kevin Bishop. David Berryman, Tom Garrett, Brandon Peterson, Scott Peterson, Ronald Hooper and the deacons of New Birth Fellowship Church.
Public viewing was noon-7 p.m. Friday June 24, 2011, with family and friends visitation from 7-8 p.m., both at Southern Funeral Home Chapel.

I saw Jeremy for the first time in probably 10 years in Austin at the state basketball game. I always thought of him as a gentle giant. It was so great to visit with him and hear how his life was really going. It made me proud of him. To his family: my deepest sympathy. And may God bless you with His Grace and make peace in your hearts during this difficult time.

To Jeremy's family, you have my deepest sympathies. I was blessed to have had him in my fifth grade class, and always enjoyed when I saw him in town or he came to visit my class. He was a teacher's joy, what a sweet spirit. He will be greatly missed. I am sorry I could not be at his service, we were out of town. You are in our prayers.

Jeremy and I were very good friends. I sit back and think about the good times he, I, and others had when we were in school. Friday nights after the football games were the best. He was always there for me if I needed him. He was like a big brother to me. If you ever wanted to know what a real man or just the idea of what a kind, respectful, honest, genuine man or person was like, he was that person. My heart aches with so much pain behind his passing. I still can't believe it and dont want to. I will miss him so much. My heart goes out to the family. Tom, Roderick, I love you guys and keep your heads up. There's no doubt in our minds that he's in a better place. I'm sorry for your lost.
