Barry Neall Obituary

Memorial Service for Barry Francis Neall, retired Captain with the Daytona Beach Police Department, will be 1pm Saturday, April 11 at the chapel of Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, Ormond Beach. Barry Francis Neall was born September 29, 1938, in Rochester, New York, to Frank and Jane Neall. He passed peacefully at his home in Daytona Beach, at age 76, on Good Friday, April 3, 2015. Barry graduated locally from Mainland High School, and went on to attend Rollins College. He received a Master of Science in Criminal Justice and used his education to pursue his passion of becoming a police officer. As a young man, Barry served his country for two years in the U.S. Navy. He also served his community on the Daytona Beach Police Department for thirty years. His roles included President of Fraternal Order of Police and Captain of the Criminal Investigation Division. He is described by his peers as a great leader and an outstanding police officer. His wife of 34 years, Charlotte, bore him three beautiful children, Beverly, David, and Becky. Lovingly known as Pop pop, Barry spent most of his free time outdoors and with his family. Boating, fishing, golfing, skiing, camping and spoiling his grandkids and dog, Bear, were among his favorite things to do. He played a big part in teaching all of his kids and grandkids how to swim. He was a faithful member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church. Barry was predeceased by his parents and son, Frank, Jane and David Neall, who, with Christ, have prepared a place in Heaven for him. Surviving family members include two daughters, Beverly Morelli and Becky Rossi, and grandchildren Alysa (Zachary) Johnston, Anthony and Ashley Morelli, Brittany (Thomas) Zaharios, and Michael, Brianna, and Harley Rossi, and four great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, Barry has asked that donations be made to Halifax Health Hospice BeginAgain Children's Grief Center, 655 N. Clyde Morris Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32114 or a children's charity of your choice. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.volusiamemorialfunerals.com

To Barry's family:
My name is June, and I grew up in Elizabeth NJ, 3 houses down from where Barry and Mr. and Mrs. Neall lived on Fremont Place. I remember playing hide and seek and tag with Barry and his cousins, the Meincke boys. They all moved to Florida from NJ when I was about 14, and I was so sad to lose them as neighbors and playmates. I just looked at the picture gallery with tears in my eyes. Barry has beautiful children and grandchildren and seemed to enjoy them all. I had lost touch with Barry for many years, but a few years ago, his sweet cousin Carol hooked me up with Barry via e-mail, and we e-mailed for a few years before he became ill. We would reminisce about growing up in Elizabeth, NJ and I so enjoyed hearing from him!! My heart is very sad today as I think of dear Barry, but my faith tells me that he is in heaven now with his parents, who loved him so much. I will see him again one day, but I will miss his presence here on earth. He was a special guy who seemed to be loved by everyone he knew. Rest in peace, my dear childhood friend from Fremont Place! Be a guardian angel for your wonderful family now that you've earned your wings! And keep an eye out for me, too! I love you and will miss you, Barry. June Sankus Loughrey

Capt Barry Neall gave me my physical agility test to be a Daytona beach pd patrolman. The 100' aerial fire ladder truck was ok, but climbing over the 8' wall was stopping me from being on the job, until he hinted at a knot-hole in the wall to get a toe-hold. Capt Barry Neall was a 990(orange av) legend, old guard, Daytona's finest, a grrrrrreat cop/sup/admin, with a heart. It was an honor to have served with him. Thanks sir & God bless you captain & yours.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the family. Captain Neall helped shape many fine police officers. His expectation of excellence from those who worked under his command was matched only by his sense of humor.
