Frederick "Freddy" Cohen

1942 - 2015

Frederick "Freddy" Cohen, born July 18, 1942 to Hyman and Sarah Cohen, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 23, 2015 at the age of 72 years. Freddy grew up and attended school in West Hartford, CT. He, his brother-in-law, Dennis, as well as his sister, Beverly, owned and operated the very successful Republic Truck Stop in North Stonington, CT. A major employer in the New London, CT area, with a staff of over 100 men and women, the truck stop included a restaurant and motel, in addition to the largest volume diesel and gas truck stop in New London County. Freddy ran the truck stop for 20 years before retiring and moving to Palm Coast, Florida with his wife. He leaves his wife, Jo Ann, his daughter, Rachel Cohen and step sons, Richard and Christopher Leahy, as well as grandchildren: Ashley, Sara and Teresa Carr, Shawn Cohen, Samantha, Jessica and Jaclyn Leahy as well as a great grandson, Robert and great granddaughter, Elaina. He was preceded in death by his son, Shawn. Fred left four siblings: Joseph (wife, Sheila), Stanley (wife, Janet), and Martin Cohen, all of Connecticut as well as Beverly Kendall and her husband, Dennis, of Florida. Fred and his wife, Jo Ann established the Shawn Stephen Cohen Drama Memorial Fund at Stonington High School. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the above mentioned fund at the Peoples United Bank, Attn: Chris Baron, 12 Roosevelt Ave., Mystic, CT 06355. The tax deductible fund has been in existence for 10 years and provides scholarships to students from Stonington High School seeking to further their education in dramatic arts.
