Dorothy Slayton Obituary

Dorothy Mae Tanner Slayton

Dorothy Mae Tanner Slayton entered into God's nearer presence Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, in the hospice unit of Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was born in Rustburg on Aug. 1, 1926, to the late Agie and Ruth Jones Tanner.

She attended the public schools of Campbell County. As a child, she attended Free Spring Baptist Church, Rustburg. In 1947, she was baptized in Spotswood Chapel Holiness Church, Hodges, where she served in many capacities and remained a faithful, dedicated member until she was called home. She was an active member of the Senior Citizens of Gladys and Altavista. Until her retirement, she was employed by The Lane Company, Altavista, and Winebarger Church Furniture, Lynchburg.

In 1943, she married the late Henry U. Slayton.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Albert, George, Ernest, Bernice, Margaret and Rosa.

She leaves to mourn her passing her children, Bettie Haines (Ralph), of Newport News, Dottson Whidbee (Cleveland), of Richmond, Elijah Slayton (Diane), of Moreno Valley, Calif., Marjorie Slayton, of Norfolk, Irma Pinkney (late Zachary), of Tampa, Fla., Sandra G. Slayton (R.W. Goode II), of Seattle, Wash., and the Rev. Terry Slayton (Darlene), of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Joyce Ann Jones (Willie), of Lynchburg; two brothers, Agie Clifton Tanner (Claire), of Lynchburg, and Andrew Jackson "Bud" (Doris), of Denver, Colo.; five sister-in-laws, Lucy Davis, of Gladys, Alice James Slayton, of Roxbury, Mass., Rosa Slayton, of Boston, Mass., Elizabeth Parker, of Washington, D.C., and Gladys R. Slayton, of Lynchburg; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of other loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A homegoing service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at the First Church of Jesus of the Apostolic Faith, Lynchburg. Interment will be in the Spotswood Holiness Church Cemetery. Her remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. The family is receiving friends and the cortege will assemble at 419 Tabor Road, Gladys.

Aunt Dorothy, You have been my comfort and life line since mama died (your sister Rosa). Thank you. I know you are enjoying the reunion with all of your family who have gone on before you but most of all you are so glad to see your Savior who you loved so much. I miss you already.
