Wilma Basham Obituary

Published by News & Messenger from Jan. 3 to Jan. 4, 2011.
Wilma Basham Wilma Basham, age 71, of Catlett, Va., found peace on January 1, 2011. She lived for her family.

She is survived by her children John Basham Jr. and wife Shelley; Tommy Basham and wife Joy; and Cindy Sue Waters, and her sister Vicki Lynn Catlin. She was adored and admired by her grandchildren David Basham, T.J. Waters, Sunny Carito, Jenn Batchelor, Wes Basham, Jake Waters and Zack Basham, who can never hope to match her gravy-making skills. Her neverending love and her porch packages will be greatly missed by her great-grandchildren, Caleb and Leah Basham and Paige Batchelor.

Wilma began her journey in Washington, D.C., as the daughter of Sonney T. and

Melissa Mae Amburgey. She was a 19-year cancer survivor whose appetite for life took her all over the world, from Scotland to the glaciers of Alaska. She worked for Prince William County Schools for 30 years. She is reunited with her late husband John W. Basham Sr. and her brothers Calvin, Jack and Hillard Amburgey.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday January 4, 2011 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Pierce Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas, Va., 20110 where services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday January 5, 2011. Interment will follow at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to: Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Attn: Donor Services, PO Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309 in memory of Wilma Basham. Condolences may be sent to www.piercefh.com.

I have fond memories of Wilma as I started a new job with Prince William County Schools. She was patient, kind and had a wonderful sense of humor about my new job.

I was very sorry to hear of Wilma's passing. I remember my mother (Judy) and grandmother (Ann) speaking of her often over the years. I also remember meeting her many years ago at a Laughlin family reunion with two of the children present, who were very small at the time. I will be thinking of all of you during this difficult time. God bless. Angela Vendler Ashley

We used to live next door to Ms Wilma & Mr. John on Lucasville Road...I can remember many days spent with them both...cookouts, my parents playing rook with them, watching football games. I can remember plenty of times of having to look for one of my kids...they were over getting candy from Mr. John or Ms. Wilma. You will be deeply missed Ms. Wilma. All of the family are in our prayers. We love you all, James & Michelle Turner & family
