Nancy (Blankenberg) Shacter

Nancy (Blankenberg) Shacter, 85, died peacefully November 5, 2011 in McLean, Virginia. She was born on April 7, 1926 in Rockford, Illinois to Edward and Erma Carlson. She attended the University of Illinois where she met and married William I. Blankenberg of Blankenberg Photographers. They moved to Kankakee, Illinois where they raised four children. Nancy was an elementary school teacher in Kankakee from 1969 to 1989. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William I. Blankenberg, in July of 1976. Nancy was very active in the Kankakee Historical Society and spent many hours contributing her talents of photo preservation. In 1997, she was reacquainted with James Shacter, whom she dated in college, and in December of 1997 they married and she moved to Chicago where she continued her volunteer work at The Museum of Science and Industry in their archive department. James Shacter died in September of 2009. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Carlson of Palo Alto, California. She is survived by her four children, Jane Lambert and her husband, Deacon Gerald M. Lambert, of Wilton, Conn., Barbara Tobeck and her husband, Timothy Tobeck, of Manassas, Va., Jeff Blankenberg and his wife, Michele Blankenberg, of Pickens, S.C., and Mimi Roy and her husband, David Roy, of Lighthouse Point, Fla.; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Evelyn Carlson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Nancy L. Shacter to the Alzheimer's Association or to VITAS Hospice Charitable Fund made payable to The Foundation for End-of-Life Care, 5430 NW 33rd Avenue, Suite 106, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. 33309. Visitation will be held at The Schreffler Funeral Home in Kankakee, Illinois on Friday, November 11, 2011 from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Schreffler Funeral Home on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 10 a.m. followed by interment at Aroma Park Cemetery.
