Mr Granchelli. So happy to see you lived a long life. You were my 6th grade teacher in 1961. I think of you often ,even now at 72 years of age. My mother left when I was 7. I came home from school every day to an empty house. My self esteem was very low. Teachers in the lower grades humiliated me for not doing my homework or coming to school dirty. You were the first person that made me feel good about my self. You praised my essays and encouraged me to improve. When I graduated high school you showed up to wish us well. Thank you for making a difference in my life.

Mr. Granchelli was my sixth grade teacher at Forest Park way back in 1978. He was a great teacher and one of the relatively few teachers that I had that seemed to have a genuine interest in his students and a love for teaching. My condolences to Mr. Granchelli's family.

Mr. G was my sixth grade teacher. He was the best teacher I had and he helped set me straight for the rest of my life. I always talk about Mr. G and the way he carried himself and taught me how to carry myself.
When President Kennedy was shot he sent me down to the auditorium to get the details and bring them back to the class. Mr. G also took me along with his son and another classmate to see the Mets play the Dodgers in the then new Shea stadium. The Mets won.
Mr. G is often in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Papa Joe,
I feel blessed to have been your grandson and to have had you to look up to. You were a legendary role model that we all strive to be more like.
I met you when I was eight years old, a short while before Pete married my mother. You, Margie and the rest of the family treated my mother, sister and I like we were part of the family from the first day we met.
I'll never forget the first dinner you cooked for us with the crawfish, as well as your cooking tips.
Your guidance, kindness and love have been passed on throughout the family and will live on for generations to come.
I will always miss you, and your kind soul will never be forgotten.
I know you're in heaven cooking some amazing Italian food and playing baseball with the rest of the angels.
Rest in peace Papa Joe.
Love,
Justin

Mr Granchelli was my 6th grader at Forest Park and I have such fond memories of him. From having reading groups at a table that also had car parts on it to his research assignments that had me giving 3 minute presentations on totally random things like nutmeg, he was one of a kind. Rest in Peace, Mr. G.

Mr Granchelli was my 6th grade teacher at Forest Park. He was one in a million. My favorite memory of him was allowing us to watch the baseball game playoff's during class time. He was funny, kind and caring. I am blessed to have known him. Rest in Peace Mr. Granchelli and watch over your beautiful family always.

Dear Margie,
So sorry to hear about Joe. He will be sorely missed and never forgotten. We were together in our youth but then parted ways and found others in our lives but never really lost touch. Our three wonderful children were always our first priority and they came to love you too.
Margie, I am so glad he found you and had a happy life with you.
Now Joe has left this life and entered into another with God.
auf wiedersehen! Joe

Dad, It's only been 3 days and I miss you like crazy. Rest in peace and know that you were loved by many and will never be forgotten. I am going to miss the days where we would come to visit you and spend the afternoon together shopping at Costco, Uncle G's and then lunch, usually at Branchinelli's. It really hasn't sunk in yet that we won't ever do that again. I will always have those memories forever. We will always look after Margie, not just because you would have wanted us to, but because we love her so much!!

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.

My Papa Joe was one of a kind .... intelligent, funny, smart, wise, and kind. He was a frugal man, but also very generous and charitable at the same time. Papa Joe was an avid baseball fan. In his younger years, he was an exceptional baseball player.
I have fond childhood memories of spending time with him and Margie in Long Island and later, Martha's Vineyard. It was so much fun to go clamming with Papa Joe, visit with Aunt Mary and Uncle Tony, take the ferry to Nantucket, spend days with Charlie at his arcade, eat pistacio ice cream, and explore Martha's Vineyard's beaches. I remember going with Papa Joe to fill empty gallon bottles with naturally filtered water from a perpetually flowing spring that drained into the ocean .... for some reason, it fascinated me that fresh water could just spring from the ground like that.
Papa Joe was a very talented cook and surely loved his garlic! My chilhood nickname for him was Doctor Gar-leek-o. His broccoli rabe was like no other, though I admit that I declined the clam and mussel creations that he offered.
Papa Joe was a good, wholesome, family man who was loved by many and will be missed by everyone who knew him. He was a good father to my mother, my aunt, and my uncle. He was a good grandfather to me and his other grandchildren. I'm not a religious person, but if there is some kind of eternal reward for living a good, honest life, Papa Joe is sure to receive it.

The world lost a quiet hero. Italian immigrant, American patriot, Korean war veteran, inspiring elementary school teacher, devoted husband, loving father, and beloved step-father. Joe Granchelli was one of the finest men I've ever met. Rock solid character. Quirky, out-of-left-field G-rated sense of humor. Huge baseball fan (and a damn good player in his day). Chef de cuisine extraordinaire. And he made one half of the best couple you ever saw. Marge and Joe Granchelli were inseparable for over 40 years. A love everlasting. Requiescat in Pace.
