Former Alaska resident Hubert "Hugh" Norman Aamodt died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, in Melbourne, Fla., at the age of 89.
Hugh was born June 13, 1920, in Hibbing, Minn., and graduated from Hibbing High School in 1938. With the military draft board "hot on his trail," Hugh volunteered for the Army in 1942. He was stationed many places, including Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; Heidelberg and Stuttgart, Germany; Fort Holabird, Md.; and Fort Richardson.
In 1946, he saw "a government paper looking for people for the Counter Intelligence Corps -- for 'Spy Catchers' and putting these guys out of business any way that we could." Looking for adventure, he volunteered for the program in September 1946. He worked in Army Intelligence, advanced rapidly and retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1965.
After retiring from the United States Army, Hugh worked in real estate in Alaska and Florida. He also lived in Fairbanks for many years. Hugh was extremely proud of his military service and was an active member of the retired Counter Intelligence Corps organization until his death.
Hugh is survived by his wife, Ursula; his sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Patsy Aamodt and Jerry and Evelyn Aamodt; daughters and sons-in-law, Patty and Mike Hostetter, Peggy Aamodt and Kathleen and LeRoy Shank; grandchildren, Jerry Jr., James, Nels, Avaiyak, Jeremy, Jacqueline, Jerica and Justin Aamodt, Heather Crawford, Andrea Hostetter, Jennifer Simmons, Ried and Lonne Woodlee; and great-grandchildren.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, Helga and Nels Aamodt; sister, Margaret Williams; and first wife, Jacquelene, mother of his five children.
Hugh enjoyed his family and friends, traveling, meeting new people, reading, and hunting for treasures at auctions and garage sales. He often said how proud he was of his children. Hugh will be missed by all who knew him for his sense of humor, ready smile, and outgoing nature.
Hugh's children are grateful to Ursula for the care she provided their father in the difficult last years of his life.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 25, at Advent Lutheran Church, 7550 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne, (321) 259-8515.
Call Ursula Aamodt at (321) 254-4335 or Kathleen Shank at (907) 490-5961 for more information. Condolences may be sent to Ursula Aamodt at 1491 Patriot, Melbourne, FL 32940.

Dear Peggy, Mike, Jerry, Patty, Kathy and family,
It's hard to believe the Aamodt family has been a part of our family for over 50 years. Even though you moved to Alaska about 47 years ago, our families always kept in touch. I'll never forget how wonderful Mr. Aamodt was to us kids - remember the baby alligators in the kid's pool - and the fantastic squash he grew and then fried that we ate like candy? And the summer days when he would drop us off at the pool on his way to work at Ft. Holabird? What a wonderful man - we will cherish his memory. Love, the Boulier family

To Lonne, Ried, and Jennifer,
My loss is your loss. We need to recognize that grandchildren feel the hurt of losing a loved one, too. Papa loved you very much, as we all loved him. I know you will always hold him tenderly in your hearts because of who you are.

Ursula, and the rest of the family. Our deepest condolences to the family. I will never forget Hugh who became Poppa to my children. They grew up with an Aapa but it meant a whole lot to them having a Poppa too. The few days of visits he made to Barrow, he left good memories. God bless you all. Love from the Simmonds's.
