Fred Oliver Bates, Jr., 82, of Raleigh, died March 14, 2011 at The William M. Dunlap Center for Caring in Raleigh.
Fred was born March 28, 1928 in Murphy, NC to Fred Oliver Bates, Sr. and Bertha Lovingood Bates. He was a US Army veteran of Korea. Fred was a graduate of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and attended the school of law. Fred was the Executive Secretary for the State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors. He was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Governor James B. Hunt in 1993.
Fred is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Arwilda Grant Bates; sons, Fred O. Bates III; T.N. Bates and his wife, Connie; George Crae Bates; and Trace Kevin Bates; 7 grandchildren; aunt, Maggie Lovingood Anderson; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 17, 2011 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Sunset Cemetery in Murphy, NC.
