Myrna Wellons Obituary

Myrna Miller Wellons, 40, a North Carolina women’s rights and social welfare champion, died Monday from a catastrophic stroke.
At her death, she was president-elect of the Board for the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), North Carolina Chapter, vice-chair of the state’s Diabetes Advisory Council, and a board member of the Mental Health Association of North Carolina.
Ms. Wellons in her career served as director of government relations for the NASW’s state chapter. She was a familiar face at the General Assembly advocating for child welfare, women’s rights, diabetes issues and support for North Carolina families.
She was employed in Corporate Affairs for Lilly USA at her death and was responsible for the company’s government relations in North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas, notably on mental health and diabetes issues.
She was especially noted for her mentoring and training of social workers throughout the state. She was a visiting lecturer at North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work and Meredith College. It was not uncommon for her former students to call her for professional and personal advice, at all hours.
A voracious reader from childhood, she excelled in school and learned her public speaking skills in Caldwell County 4-H. She was a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill in journalism and psychology, the School of Law at UNC-Chapel Hill, and the School of Social Work at UNC-Chapel Hill’s masters program.
Her friends and professional colleagues especially remember her energy and passion for her work. One former employee recalled her as the earliest person at the office and her “faster than most people can think” greetings about the day’s events. Another confessed her own fear of public speaking as a NASW intern and Ms. Wellons’ cure—getting all the public speaking assignments.
She was known by many of her friends as “Mama Myrna” for her interest in their lives, both at work and personal. “If she hadn’t heard from you, she would call your cell phone, then your home phone and next your work phone until you called her back,” said one. “She wanted everyone to succeed, even if it meant creating a spreadsheet for your family’s budget,” said another friend.
Ms. Wellons was a tireless lobbyist for her causes and worked with Democrats and Republicans on professional issues such as “title protection” for social workers and public funding for diabetics. She embodied Thomas Jefferson’s vision of “citizen.”
She was working the halls in the General Assembly when she realized her baby was on his way. A joyful person, she sang and talked to her son daily even before his birth.
Ms. Wellons is survived by her husband, Robert Shawn Wellons and her infant son, Christopher, both of Cary. She is also survived by her brother Troy Miller and his wife, Amy, and their two children of Lenoir, and her father Jack D. Miller of Knoxville, TN. She is remembered by almost everyone who met her.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 1:00 pm at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Rd. Raleigh, NC.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Christopher Wellons Fund c/o Capital Community Foundation, P.O. Box 18902, Raleigh, NC 27619 or Friends of the N.C. Diabetes Advisory Council c/o N.C. Public Health Foundation, P.O. Box 18763, Raleigh, NC 27619.
Funeral arrangements are by Bryan-Lee of Raleigh.

Even though I only had minimal interactions with Myrna, her loss is extremely hard for me to bare. She was always full of life, energy and happiness. Her visions of an increasingly just world and her desire to remain dedicated to our profession was simply inspirational. Each time we talked I was deeply moved by her passion.

I only knew of Myrna through our collective work with NASW-NC, but she will forever remain in my heart and mind as a true example of what every human being should strive to be-an advocate, a leader and an unwavering friend.

My deepest sympathy go out to Shawn, baby Christopher, and family. May God hold you in His hand and bring you peace and comfort through your loss. Occasionally in life, you meet someone with remarkable intellectual gifts; occasionally in life, you meet someone with remarkable compassion and action toward the betterment of humankind. Myrna was an exceptional, dynamite collision of both those things. We have lost a rare treasure, a fine example and a true friend. I had the great pleasure to get to know Myrna when we went through Leadership America North Carolina together, and I was struck by her passion for the issues, her energy, and her wonderful joie de vivre. I am shocked and profoundly saddened to hear of Myrna's passing. I taught with Myrna at NC State and knew her to be a fearless advocate and engaging teacher. She was an amazing life force, committed to making the world a better place. She advocated by building relationships; no one was better. We will keep her family in our thoughts and prayers.

I just wanted to express my sympathy to Myrna's family. Although it has been many years since college, we were sorority sisters there and from the same hometown and high school. Reading all Myrna has accomplished in her life since then is truly amazing. She will be missed by so many. Love and prayers to those she leaves behind.

Myrna was a force of nature; I loved our great discussions on social justice, policy, and the law when we were in grad school (UNC/MSW) together. She will be missed, esp. now when we need her tenacity and other gifts more than ever.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during your time of loss. As a member of NASW and NASW-NC it is a great loss to the field of Social Work. We appreciate all of the hard work and sacrifice she gave. I appreciate you for sharing her with us.

I have known and respected Mryna for over 15 years. I first met her in her role with NASW and saw and heard her at many advocacy events, NASW conferences, etc. She was the total professional and had the people skills to make good things happen. She was very bright and brightened up people's lives when they were in her presence because of her smile, whit, and compassion for whatever she stood for and that was for a great deal of issues.

My condolenses goes out to her family and to all of us who will miss seeing and interacting with her during this phase of our existence. She added a lot to this early realm. "Well done, thy good and faithful servant."

This Friday, March 5th, the Annual NASW Ethics Conference will be held. I will miss seeing her. She was always at the conference helping out, manning a sponsor booth or contributing in some significant way. I will miss seeing her there as I know everyone will who knew and respected her so much.

Blessings,

Enjoyed learning from and spending time with Myrna during my training in Social Work in 2004-2006. Saw her at all the conventions and remember her as a vivacious individual. When I saw the email today, it was hard to comprehend that she has made transition and at such an early age. The social work profession as well as the world in general has truly lost a jewel. Thank you Myrna for the impact you had on my life and I am sure on many others.
