Janet Huff Switzer, 94, died on Monday, September 27, 2010, at Bridgewater Retirement Community, where she had resided for several years after making her home in Staunton.

A daughter of the late Reverend Bernard and Lucretia Wise Huff, she was born on January 19, 1916, in Augusta County, Virginia.

On March 10, 1937, she married Walter Roy Switzer who died on July 23, 1996. At his death they had been married for 59 years.

They was preceded in death by their first born daughter, Linda Elizabeth Switzer, who only lived two days, dying from pneumonia. She was preceded in death by a brother, Griffith B. Huff, who died on January 15, 1995; and a sister, Gladys H. Bailey who died on February 19, 2004.

She was a lifelong member and deaconess of the Lebanon Church of the Brethren. She had taught Sunday School class, was a member of the choir, Women's Fellowship Group, member of the XYZ Group, and a member of the Home Demonstrations Club. For many years Walter and Janet worked with the youth group of the church taking them on many meaningful and fun activities.

She is survived by her son, W. Rothwell Switzer and his wife, Connie, of Mount Sidney, Virginia; her daughter, Karen S. Cline and her husband, John A., of Grottoes, Virginia; one sister, Edith H. Miller of Bridgewater, Virginia; one granddaughter, Stephanie S. Clements and her husband, Andy, of Frisco, Texas; one grandson, Mark A. Cline of Radford, Virginia; two great-granddaughters, Carrie and Kendall Clements, both of Frisco, Texas; one niece, Lucretia Lane of Bridgewater, Virginia; and three nephews, Nathan Miller of Bridgewater, Virginia, Phillip Miller of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Gary Huff of Georgia.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Weyers Cave. The casket will be closed.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at Lebanon Church of the Brethren with the Reverend Joel Ballew officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lebanon Church of the Brethren Memorial Fund, 1168 Lebanon Church Road, Mount Sidney, VA 24467.

The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Bridgewater Home for their support, loving care, and friendship to Janet.

Rothwell,Karen, and Family: So very sorry to hear about your mom. We were out of town for a couple of days,so by the time I realized about Ms. Janet her viewing, and services were completed. I will let my mom know tommarrow. You all will be in our thoughts, and prayers, God Bless!
