Arthur Salminen Obituary

Published by News Virginian from Dec. 8 to Dec. 9, 2010.

Arthur Harold Salminen

Arthur Harold Salminen, 71, of Waynesboro, died suddenly while vacationing with his wife in Pensacola Beach. He was on the peer overlooking the Gulf Coast enjoying a beautiful sunny day on Saturday, December 4, 2010.

He will be missed by his family and friends. He leaves behind his wife, Adele, of 44 years; and his two daughters, Britt Farrington and her husband, Bob, and Kristina Adler and her husband, Matt; grandchildren, Alex and Matt Farrington, and Jake and Joy Adler. Also twin brother, Carl Salminen of New York; and sister, Carolyn Konheim-Ketchum and her husband, Brian, of New York.

He was preceded in death by his mother Irene; and Carl Salminen.

Arthur was born on August 17, 1939 in Flushing, New York. He attended Valley Forge Military Academy in New York and Pratt Institute and Brooklyn Community College. He went on to work for Hopeman Brothers as a project engineer during which time he developed two patents for navy ship interior designs. Arthur was transferred with Hopeman Brothers and moved his family from New York to Waynesboro in 1971 where he resided until 2010.

In 1988 Arthur suffered from a severe stroke and has been cared for by his loving wife since that time.

He never gave up on working to continually improve his physical limitations. He would be seen almost every day driving his golf cart to the public tennis courts at the park working on his serve or to the WCC driving balls at the range; all with one hand!

Thanks to all the kind people who supported him with his efforts. Those who knew "Artie" will remember him as a fun loving, vivacious man with a generous nature and a big heart. He was quite a ham! He had an incredible determination and an amazingly positive attitude that was an inspiration to all who knew and loved him. He will be dearly missed.

A private family gathering will be held Saturday, December 18, 2010 at The Iris Inn, Waynesboro. An open house will follow at 3p.m. for a remembrance to celebrate his life.

In lieu of flowers, please contribute to a local charity of your choice.

Artie was the best 10 handicap lefty I ever had the privilege to play with or teach. His zeal for life was best expressed by his determination to play the game he loved.

Adele, Karen and I were very saddened to read of Artie's passing, but know fully that he is now singing with the angels; and if I know Artie, leading the choir. Fondly, Dan and Karen Brown

Truly a wonderful human being. One of the most kindest, nicest and funniest man I have ever come to known. He meant a lot to me and was always an idol. His spirit always amazed me. I am so glad I got to talk to him over the phone the day before he ascended to heaven. He sure picked one of the most beautiful spots on earth...a perfect runway to heaven. He will be truly missed but never ever forgotten. Love you dearly Aunt Adele, Britt and Krissy. You mean alot to me.

As a child I can remember seeing Artie walk the neighborhood every single day...with absolute determination to MAKE IT and beat the odds. I admired him.

As an adult although my visits with him were infrequent...he always made me smile. I am sure Artie is running through heaven right now making everyone around him smile. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Adele. LOVE YOU.

Artie was a tough competitor on the golf course. After his stroke Artie's competitve spirit was strengthened by his fighting spirit and determination to enjoy life. Always good for a laugh Artie was truly one of a kind.

Adele: I am so sorry to read of Artie's passing - It is comforting to know that you on vacation and he was enjoying himself . Kristina told me recently at an open house you all were going to Florida.
May the Lord give you comfort and peace. Fondly, Pat Rexrode

I didn't have the pleasure of knowing the gentleman, but if he was half as nice as Adele, I am sure he was a pleasure to know!
