Beatrice Velenovsky Obituary

Published by News Virginian on Jan. 13, 2011.
Beatrice H. Velenovsky

Beatrice Hibbard Velenovsky, 86, passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at her home at Summit Square, Waynesboro, Virginia, after a brief battle with cancer.

Bea was born in Gasport, New York, on July 9, 1924. She moved to Virginia with her husband, Pat, in 1955, when they were transferred from Buffalo, New York, to the Richmond offices of DuPont. The family moved to Waynesboro in 1970 when her husband became managing editor of the News-Virginian. At that time, Bea took a position with Barnwell and Jones Real Estate, which she held until her retirement. She often said there was no better place to live than the Valley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin J. "Pat" Velenovsky and her stepson, Jon Velenovsky.

She is survived by four children Sharon V. Dickinson and Frank, David S. Velenovsky and Donna, Lisa Velenovsky Hayashi and Dennis, and Scott J. Velenovsky and Janet; three granddaughters, Julia Kreider and Mike, Amy Koehler and Adam, and Lisa Dickinson; two step-grandchildren, Kristen and Kevin Hayashi; three great-grandchildren, Katelyn and David Kreider, and Ty Koehler; her niece, Sally Vozel; and numerous grandpets.

Bea was known for her infectious laughter and always putting others before herself. She was a long-time volunteer at the Hospice of the Shenandoah. She also was an avid reader and a gardener with a purple thumb (but no less enthusiastic for it). Bea loved playing bridge with friends, and was a Wii bowler of some renown. While her interests can be spelled out rather easily, words themselves cannot describe the qualities that made her so special to her friends and family.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, January 15, 2011, at McDow Funeral Home, 1701 Main Street, Waynesboro, Virginia. Inurnment will be private.

Her family would like to thank Summit Square staff for their kind and loving care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Summit Square, 501 Oak Avenue, Waynesboro, VA 22980 or Hospice of the Shenandoah at Augusta Health, P.O. Box 215, Fishersville, VA 22939.

All of us in the Jones family loved Bea. She was one of a kind and will be sorely missed as she touched so many lives.I only hope you can find a modicum of comfort knowing so many of her friends have her and you the family members in our thoughts and prayers.

My memories of Bea are mainly from my teenage years, when I was a frequent guest in the Velenovsky home "hanging out" with Lisa. It was obvious that Bea's children meant a great deal to her, and the time I spent in her home was comforting and special for me. Bea always made me feel welcome, and I appreciated her candor and insights. As an adult, I enjoyed running into her and chatting while I was visiting my parents, who still live around the corner from her former home. I am so saddened to hear of her loss, and I hope her family finds comfort in knowing that she touched many lives with her kindness and consideration.
My deepest sympathy to all of you.

I knew Bea during my childhood years, where I was (very) frequently a guest in her home being close friends with both Scott and Lisa. She was always warm and welcoming, and had this great infectious laughter - she really found humor in all life’s situations. I especially liked how her son David in his teens would affectionately refer to her as “Buzzard”, a quirky nickname that she took in the nature in which it was intended – a term of endearment. She was there in so many of my childhood memories being not only "mother to my friends" but my parents lifelong friend as well. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
I am so sorry for your loss.

"Bea" always made me feel so good. I met her when I was renting at the Kenmore Park Apts. Every month I would journey down to the office where I would deposit my rent . We would have the nicest talks and I can remember her smiling face and how warm she made you feel. I hadn't seen my friend for some time but I just want the family to know that all those that knew her will miss her shining spirit. My prayers are with you all. God Bless,
