SALOMON, JOHN H. John H. Salomon passed away at home on Tuesday, November 1, 2016. He is survived by his children, Ann Salomon of New Haven, CT, William Salomon of Woodstock, NY and James Salomon of Providence, RI, his daughters-in-law, Nan Salomon and Kathleen Gannon and five grandchildren, Hannah Salomon, William Taylor Shivell and Joshua, Nolan and Emma Gannon-Salomon. John was born in Essen, Germany, July 17, 1927 and immigrated to the United States in 1937 with his parents, Henry and Frieda and brothers, Dietrich and Kurt. The family settled in New Haven where John met his wife Dorothy, while attending Hillhouse High School. John attended Yale University, studying Mechanical Engineering, and afterward worked at the United Illuminating Co. for 34 years. He started as an Engineering Assistant and worked at power stations in Bridgeport and New Haven. He eventually became Superintendent of Production. He was working in Bridgeport during the blackout of 1965 and remembered contacting the other plants to disconnect from the overloaded grid. John had many friends at the UI and earned the respect of his colleagues. In all aspects of his life, John was a systematic engineer and manager who was thoughtful and considerate in making decisions. He enjoyed the satisfaction that comes from working hard at a job he enjoyed. John and Dorothy were married for 58 years until Dorothy passed away suddenly in 2009. They lived in West Haven and Woodbridge, where they loved to entertain family and, later, in Daytona Beach, Florida. They were partners in a marriage of love and caring for each other and their family. John volunteered as Chairman on the Sewer Authority in Woodbridge. After Dorothy’s death, John lived at Elim Park in Cheshire, a supportive and caring community. Those who knew and loved John will fondly remember him as a beloved father, grandfather and uncle. He enjoyed a good conversation, solving problems, finding new uses for things and building and fixing everything around the house. He liked people and respected their points of view and was well liked in return. John’s fondest memories were the times he spent with family and travelling with Dorothy after retirement. They enjoyed extensive travels throughout the United States and beyond. In 1979, they visited China as some of the earliest American tourists allowed into that country. Their adventures spanned five decades, taking them on a riverboat cruise through Russia, all over Europe, to Japan, Singapore, and the Philippines, Egypt, Australia and New Zealand. Most recently, they cruised around Cape Horn in 2007 and through the Caribbean in November, 2008. A graveside service will be held at B’nai Jacob Memorial Park, Wintergreen Ave, New Haven, Connecticut on Thursday, November 3rd at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Elim Park Resident Benevolence Fund. The Weller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
