Charlotte Krosnick Obituary

Charlotte Kirschner Krosnick, 93, died peacefully on Sunday August 6, 2017. She was born January 30 1924, the daughter of Anna and Nathan Kirschner, and was raised and lived most of her life in Hamden, Connecticut. Charlotte graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1945, and later added a degree from the Yale University School of Music. Charlotte spent over 60 years as a professional pianist and as a piano teacher of children and adults. She studied with George Kochevitsky, and was Consulting Editor on a book about his piano pedagogy. She registered "The Tee Shirt" song, co-written with William Dunn in 1975, and published an introduction to piano called "Piano in Black and White" in both English and French in the 1990s. She followed the pianist Sviatoslav Richter wherever he played all over the world. Charlotte is survived by her step-son Howard Krosnick, his wife Jacqueline and their daughter Ariel; her sister-in-law Margaret Murphy; and her cousins Saul Dunn, Susan Starr, Elma Guttenberg, Miriam Galewitz, Priscilla Caplan, Neal Guttenberg, Lisa Weiss, Beth Lovell, Jonathan Starr, Eve Galewitz and Philip Galewitz. She was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband Bernard Krosnick, her brother C. Paul Kirschner, and her cousins William Dunn and Abigail Caplan. Independent and iconoclastic, Charlotte lived a relatively unconventional life. Small by stature, she had a very large presence. She traveled widely, with multiple extended trips to France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Israel. At 70 years old, she volunteered in the Israeli Military, a summer she spoke about with great excitement. She loved Romantic era music, Baroque furniture, art deco jewelry and 1960s Alfa Romeo. She read three newspapers daily, and would not answer her black cradle phone during the McNeil Lehrer Report. She quoted Jane Austen, but could not recognize any modern movie stars. Her family and friends will tell anecdotes about Charlotte Krosnick for many years to come. Funeral Services will be held at Bikur Cholim Sheveth Achim Cemetery, 3 Brocket Place, East Haven, CT. on TUESDAY morning August 8,2017 at 11:00 o'clock. Funeral Arrangements are in care of Robert E. Shure Funeral Home, New Haven. To sign an on-line registry book or to leave a message of condolence, please visit;www.shurefuneralhome.com. Charl was my piano teacher and later became my mother-in-law. She changed my mind about Judaism, about Israel, and about how to travel and truly enjoy it. Her playing was sublime.

To Charlotte's next of kin,

My cousin who lives in New Haven informed me that Charlotte has passed away. She suggested that I use this site as I did not have an email address for any family member.

I just wanted to write that Charlotte was a close friend of my Mom's, Florence Yudkin (who died in March, 2002). My mother would tell me how often they would get together, etc. Charlotte, also, visited me where I live, on Kibbutz Ketura.

She loved Israel and was proud of her Jewish heritage.

She also was a huge fan of UCONN women's basketball!

I wish to extend my condolences to the family.

We at The American Friends of Bar-Ilan University were deeply saddened to learn of Mrs. Krosnick's passing and wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the entire family.

Charlotte was a talented and delightful individual, staunchly devoted to Israel. Her support for our university was an expression of that commitment.

May her memory be for a blessing.
