Bradley Yucius Obituary

PRESCOTT, Ariz. - Bradley Alan Yucius was born on Nov. 24, 1979, in Newton, and died at the home of his mother and stepfather on Sept. 8.
An avid outdoorsman, Brad loved spending his time fishing, hunting, hiking with his dogs, bird watching, and playing disc golf. He was always excited for baseball or hockey games and could be counted on to bring more fun to every adventure. You would have a difficult time finding someone more kind, compassionate, or gentle. Brad would do anything for anyone, be it friend or stranger, and expect nothing in return. His dry sense of humor, quick wit, loyalty and big hugs will be missed by all who knew him.
Brad graduated from Prescott College, in Prescott Ariz., where he ultimately made his home and many wonderful friends. He enjoyed the desert southwest as well as the woods, streams, and lakes of New Jersey. Nothing brought him more joy than spending time with loved ones and his constant canine companions, Buddy and Sal.
Addiction took our son, brother, nephew, cousin, uncle and friend. Brad was undergoing treatment and working hard to get healthy, but struggled, and on this day, heroin won. Strength of character, commitment to one's self and the support of others is not always enough. The disease is real and the effects are devastating.
Brad is survived by his mother and stepfather, Lisa and Nick Arbolino, of Stillwater; father, Alan Yucius, of Tamarac, Fla.; sister, Rachel Strayer and her husband, Travis, of Carlisle, Pa.; sister, Lauren Huffman, of Sparta; dear friend, TJ Huffman, of Culver Lake; nieces and nephews, Rowan and Jack Pallis and Olivia and Brody Huffman; aunts and uncles, Susan Cirigliano, of New York City, and Bob and June Yucius, of Lafayette; cousins, Maritza Schaeffer, of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., Szoke Schaeffer, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Jennifer Yucius, of Richmond, Vt., Jill Retz, of Wantage; and countless extended family members and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2-5 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Stillwater Fire House, 929 Stillwater Road Route 521, Stillwater, with a commemoration at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to honor Brad's memory to Caron Treatment Centers Attn: Development Office, PO Box 150, Wernersville PA 19565, or online at https://www.caron.org/give-to-caron/donate-form, or The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation, 6800 Wheeler Canyon Road, Santa Paula CA 93060, or online at https://searchdogfoundation.org/donate. Not sure what to say?

September 23, 2017

Dear Lisa and family - I am so sorry to hear of Brad's death. I remember the times we all shared together when our children were young. Brad had such an easy going spirit and such a cute smile. The last time I had the pleasure of his company was at a family wedding a few years ago. We had such a nice conversation and shared a few memories of times gone by, which still makes me smile when I think about him. There are no words to say that will make up for this loss, but please know that we will all keep Brad and all of you in our thoughts and prayers.

I'll see you tonight, in my dreams. Everynight, I have dreams about us when we were in grade school. I used to get really scared by this, but it's been happening so long now, I'm used to it. I'll see you tonight!

I remember Brad as a good kid. Our society likes to promote the concept that one can "try anything," but the reality is a percentage of us are vulnerable to becoming addicted. Your powerful, honest obituary has done Brad justice in sharing the essence of his person. But it also challenges us all not to overlook the sinister evil of what opiates, and other drugs, can do to good, but vulnerable people. God bless Lisa and Nick, Rachel and Lauren and the Yucius family. It is so hard to deal with a life cut so short, but so admirable that you shared the truth so that others can take heed and potentially save a loved one by the awareness you have instilled.

I didn't know your son, but I also am the mother of an addict and know the suffering you and he have endured. I am sorry for your loss. I prayed for him at Mass yesterday and I hope you find peace.
