I am deeply saddened to hear of Mr. Mathews passing. I have been trying to find him for a few years now to thank him for his teaching, friendship and life experiences. I had the pleasure to go scuba diving with him in the Bahamas over a spring break while at Wyoming High School, and always have had great memories of that trip and talk about it often. I still dive today thanks to him giving me that opportunity. I look forward to seeing him when I get called home and we can scuba again. Rest in Peace Mr Mathews.

Mr. Mathews was an amazing teacher, and a very kind person. His teaching still impacts my life today, 30 some odd years later. My thoughts are with his family today as they say goodbye.

My deepest condolences to his family. Mr. Mathews was a kind man and one of my favorite teachers. In fact, it is partly because of him that I became a high school biology teacher myself. He made quite an impact on my life and he will be greatly missed.

John was one of a kind. Since the day I joined the family 37 yrs ago he and Linda always made me feel welcome. I always wished I had had a teacher like John because I too loved the sciences but never had the guidance that John shared with his students. He will be greatly missed.. <3

I knew John as "Mr. Mathews" while as a high school student at Wyoming. Mr. Mathews is one of the primary influences with respect to my career. I went 'whale watching' (we never saw a whale) camping with Mr. Mathews as a biology spring break field trip; I will remember it fondly. I am not a geologist working at an Environmental consulting field. While I was always interested in the life sciences, Mr. Mathews reinforced this. I am sorry to hear of his passing. I will never forget his display of the bumble bee mating ritual in our advanced biology class. He was one of the best teachers I ever had.

Mr. Mathews was my biology teacher and a large reason that I pursued science once I went to college. His love of nature was infectious and he was one of the best teachers I ever had. Such a kind and thoughtful man.

Fond memories of Paul's last outing with John

We always felt that John was a wonderful field naturalist and teacher. He was also a devoted friend who shared many of our interests. Paul has fond memories of doing environmental consulting work with John and the many discussions they had about their projects. We both looked forward to seeing John at 101 planning meetings and conferences. When looking at his framed photo of a hemlock branch, we remember this special man. He will be missed.

I was so sorry to hear of John's passing. I served with him on the Camp Kern board and John really cared for the kids. He will be missed.

Linda, John has been a friend of Connie & me since I first attended the 101 Conference. Another of the "Big Trees" have fallen, but we will have John's music & photography to sustain us along with the memories of his gentle spirit & wonderful friendship.
