SHIELDS

Colleen Vallandingham, passed away on November 20, 2014 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood. She is survived by her son Val B. Shields and his wife Vicky Barnes Shields of Falmouth. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Avery Clinton "Tick" Shields and by her father C.S. "Stanley" Vallandingham and mother Kleo Morehead Vallandingham. She graduated in 1947 from Walton-Verona High School and was valedictorian of the class. Shen then went to the University of Louisville and graduated in 1951 with a Mathematics degree and honors in the class. In 1955 Mr. Baker of the Walton-Verona School system asked her to become their High School Mathematics teacher and she agreed. She taught school from 1955 until the spring of 1965 when her son was born. She resumed teaching in 1974 until she retired with 27 ½ years of service at Walton-Verona High School. Before and after college, she worked in the Vallandingham family business in Walton, "The Walton Garage" Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge Agency until it closed in 1969. She served on the Walton-Verona School Board, Walton-Verona School Foundation and was inducted into the Walton-Verona Alumni Hall of Fame. She was a member of the Walton Christian Church and Bykota Sunday School Class. After moving to Pendleton County she attended Unity Baptist Church. She was a lifelong resident of Walton until 2002. Colleen and Tick then moved in their new home in Pendleton County to be closer to their son and family farming operation. Tick, Colleen and Val started in the early 80's breeding Chianina and Chiangus cattle and developed VBS Farms, a nationally known breeder and exhibitor, with one of the most predominant herds in the Southwest. Mrs. Shields was a great teacher and a great person. I only had her for but one semester due to Val's pending arrival, but it was easy to see her excellence. In later years, I enjoyed numerous chats with her outside the house on Alta Vista. A true WVHS HOF'er.

Rest in Peace.

Val and Vicky, So sorry to read about Colleen. She was a very special person and you will miss her every day. I always liked being around her and Tick. They always made me feel welcome in their home. I do believe they are together now and he is probably saying "What took you so long, what's for dinner?" Val you were blessed with great parents and they loved you from the day you were born, you were their whole life. Vicky they loved you like you were their daughter. She will be missed by everyone she touched. Take care and bless you both.
