Alfred Joseph Muller, Jr. (The Chief) passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, July 8, 2016, He was born in New Orleans on July 12, 1920. Beloved husband of the late Hazel Marie Champagne Muller. Father of the late Lt. Cmdr. Kenneth Daniel Muller (Jacquelyn). Cherished father of Suzanne Adams (Joe-deceased), Clifford Muller (Susan), Douglas Muller (Patti), and Gerard Muller (Rebecca). Proud grandfather of 14 and great-grandfather of 16. He was a graduate of St. Aloysius high school in 1937 and served in World War II in the U.S. Coast Guard. Al was an avid outdoorsman who knew every inch of his city and the surrounding waterways. He truly lived the motto of Louisiana as a "Sportsman's Paradise". Amongst his peers in the decoy carving world, he is a legend. His exhibits have been shown at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, The Smithsonian Institute, the New Orleans World's Fair and recognized in numerous media outlets (Today Show, New Orleans World's Fair Commemorative Cassette and a Louisiana Folklife documentary). Al has appeared in many publications including: By Southern Hands, Wetland Heritage and noted in other books and magazines. He was a popular carving instructor at Delgado Community College. "Mr. Al" was honored with a lifetime achievement award from the Louisiana Antique Decoy Collectors in 2015. He has been a long time member of the Louisiana Wildfowl Carvers and Collectors Guild. His decoys are permanently exhibited in several museums. Al was a one-man ambassador to the city that he loved by introducing thousands of visitors to the world of Cajun dancing, music, and the Louisiana culture. Letters are still received from all over the world from guests he, his wife, and family have embraced. His dignified presence and optimism will be sadly missed by his numerous nieces, nephews and the many people he has touched with his passion and humility. We wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Fidelis (Janice House) for the tender and loving care he received in their unique and welcoming home. In appreciation for their timely help and advice we would ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Notre Dame Hospice of New Orleans (www.notredamehospice-no.org/donate) or your favorite charity. Family and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the Gerard L. Schoen Chapel of JACOB SCHOEN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 3827 Canal St., New Orleans, LA. at 12:15pm on Saturday, July 16, 2016. Mr Muller, how often, I thought of you. After Hurricane Katrina my life, my world, my surrounded changed. I/WE lost so many contacts with family, friends and neighbors. You and your wife where wonderful, admired, supportive, and devoted couple to me a my kids. YOU saw so much in me and believed in me. Thank you for the wonderful man you have been. WISH, I have expressed to you years ago. Thank you also for selling my first home to me on Printers Street.

Just got this news from Lana! Struggling for the right words... he was like sunshine in a dark room. We loved Al & Cousin Hazel and are happy that they are together again! But grieve with their family at this time. The last time we saw him was when Leona died in January of '08. So many have now left us! Sorry we didn't know about Ken or Joe! We, too, have lost close family members. What a grand reunion we will have one day in Heaven! Love & Prayers! Wrapping ya'll in our hearts! Peace...

I am very saddened to know that Mr Al has passed on to the eternal duck marsh, but know he is happy to be there. He was truly a patriarch to all duck hunters, decoy makers and decoy collectors. Even in his later years, he had great enthusiasm whenever we talked about our favorite pastime and loved to hear your recent successes and share his memories with you of his many experiences afield.i will truly miss this great guy

Al was a kind, loving man and a fabulous dancer!!! I met Al while visiting New Orleans with Al's friend, my sister Valerie LaVake. Valerie, Michael, Barb and I all learned how to Cajun dance from Al. We had a wonderful time in New Orleans, thanks to Al. I hope he is dancing his way to his loving wife.

Jerry, Becky and all the family we just want to express our condolences on the passing of Mr Al, I called him my boyfriend but we shared more than that. We shared our Birthdays and with him being born in 1920 and I came along 40 years later. I cherish the dancing I did with him at famous Ouber parties and will miss his face during the holidays. I hope the family finds peace knowing he is in a better place. Love to all of you from Louie and I.
