James J. Hunt III

James J. Hunt, III, 70, formerly of Teaneck, loving teacher, coach, husband, brother, father, and friend passed away suddenly on April 28th. Born and raised in Teaneck, Jim was a lifelong parishioner of St. Anastasia's and graduated from Bergen Catholic HS in 1964 and from Manhattan College in 1968. Jim taught for 39 years in the Dumont Public Schools before his retirement. He also coached baseball and basketball at the high school, guiding the Huskies to numerous championships during his tenure. In addition, Jim worked for many years at the Relic Rack record store in Hackensack. He was an enthusiastic fan of 1950's rock n' roll and had a passion for Doo-Wop music, even co-authoring a book on the subject. Jim was considered an authority on the music of his youth. Beloved husband of Cherie. Devoted father of James Hunt, IV, Ryan Hunt and his wife Alexandra. Dear brother of Virginia Hunt-Heske, Karen Wojtowicz (Alan), Denese Conte, Mickey Hunt (Dolores), John Hunt (Ann Marie) and Jacqueline Schaeder (Paul). Will be greatly missed by a plethora of nieces and nephews along with many friends. Jim was looking forward to the arrival of his granddaughter. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 3 from 2-4pm and 7-9 pm at Basralian Funeral Home, 559 Kinderkamack Rd., Oradell NJ. Mass of Christian burial Thursday 10 am at St. Anastasia's in Teaneck. Over these years having lost both of our husbands and lived through milestones of our children, I think back to what our guys were involved in. As Mikey got sicker all he told me was to rely on Jim for help in dissolving Mike's record collection. I looked at Jim as a trusted friend and was grateful for his friendship. God Bless all of us.

Coach Hunt was an amazing person. I became aware of his passing this weekend. As a teacher and coach, he made me a better person. He taught me how to respect people and laid down the foundation of Team sports. He was a respected teacher and one of the best basketball coaches I played for - (Runner-Up State Sectional Champs 1978). God bless Jim and all of his family.

I, too, have been in shock upon hearing of Jim's passing. I've just left a monthly breakfast get-together with a group of music buddies. All of our hearts were heavy with sadness. We shared memories and stories of Jim that came to our minds. I personally have known Jim since the 60's. Aside from always being on hand to answer music questions I may have had, I was indebted to him for helping me dispose of a large portion of my 45 rpm record collection through his auctions. Cherie and the family are shared in my thoughts and sorrow.

Coach Hunt was a great guy. He coached my brother Ray and I used to see him at Dumont High and at basketball camps all the time.

He will definitely be missed.

I was stunned and saddened to learn of Jims passing this morning . We were fellow record collectors having first met at the Relic Record Shoppe in 1974. Jim was a great guy and fun to talk to. He will be missed. My sincere condolences to his wife and family

I'm very very sorry to hear about Jim. I've known him since 1964 when he worked part-time on weekends in our record store, Relic Rack on Main Street in downtown Hackensack. Jim was an all-around good guy, composed, unflappable and very dedicated to his abiding passion for R&B group harmony and the myriad of 45s produced by those groups in the '50s and '60s. Jim was extremely knowledgeable about R&B group harmony music from its earliest days to the soul era...he was a dedicated collector and conveyed his enthusiasm to anyone he came in contact with. Although we rarely saw him in recent years "Coach Hunt" was always a part of our little group of longtime R&B group harmony enthusiasts.
I'm sad that this unsettling news didn't reach most of us longtime friends until Thursday..too late to pay our last respects to this terrific guy who we were lucky to have as a friend and fellow record enthusiast.

Cherie and family. On behalf of "Big" Mike Caldarulo's family, our deepest condolences. Having lost my beloved husband Michael and my kids father, I know your pain. Jim was a great guy. Having known Jim from when I met Mikey in 1981, then his big help to me and my kids after Michael's untimely death, his sweet nature and smile will be missed by me. Please call me if there is anything I can do. 908-216-1046

I have fond memories of Coach Hunt visiting my brother Ray when he was terminally ill with cancer at the age of 34. Coach showed up with an old yearbook and there was lots of reminscing and laughter about the team, wins and losses and practices. It was such a kind thing to do. I remember after 15 minutes the coach respectfully asking if he should leave and let Ray rest. Ray immediately said "Please stay" and they chatted for another hour. What a fine teacher, coach, and role model for those surrounding him. RIP Coach Hunt, you have made a difference in the world that will continue for generations.

This is terrible news. I'm upset that I did not hear about it until just now, after the funeral. He will be greatly missed among his record collector buddies.

I had the pleasure of playing for him and coaching with him. A really good guy. I amassed a lot of zeros in his gym class for being a screw up. I don't think he ever recorded them.

Fond memories are flooding back of the years that Jim taught and coached with my husband at DHS, and all the games I sat through with Cherie. Jim also taught all 3 of our kids at Honiss school. Words cannot express our profound sorrow with the passing of Jim. He was loved and respected by all those fortunate enough to know him. He was a good man and will be long remembered in the hearts of many. I spent a lot of time with Jim and another friend of ours learning about doo wop music. Jim and I would go to various record shows selling and buying records. One of the most honest men I ever knew. We send our deepest sympathy. Lenny & Joanne Marks

My family and I have very fond memories of the Hunt family growing up in Teaneck in the late 60's into the mid 70's. I remember James (Jimmy) as a upbeat and easy to talk to good all around big brother. He had an engaging personality, and high energy. Jimmy would always have conversation with my brothers and I to and from Sagamore park after playing basketball with Mickey, Buddy, Joe, and Rob Kapell, and the rest of the crew. Being the coach that he was Jimmy always imparted his basketball knowledge on the game. My condolences and prayers to all of the Hunt family who I remember so well as warm, genuine folks. May Jimmy RIP. KEEP THE FAITH!

I can honestly say that Coach Hunt was one of the greatest coaches and mentors I have ever had. The years I spent playing against his teams and being coached by him at Bergen Catholic's summer camps helped mold me into the person and coach I am today. He was always tough but fair, and he knew how to get the most out of me and all those he coached. He had a great sense of hunor and he hated to lose. If you worked hard, he would give you everything he had. I can't even begin to imagine the hundreds of players and students he positively impacted

Jim and I met in college played basketball and then became good friends.Jimmy Cherie and my wife and kids shared houses on LBI for years . We have fond memories of those summers as do our children who became good friends with Jimbo and Ryan and still are today.Jim's parents were always good to our family and I still remember Jimmy taking me to the park in Teaneck to see his younger brother Mickey work on his basketball skills. It really is hard to believe that Jim is gone and it reminds me and our classmates of 1968 Manhattan that this good life does not last forever.Rest in peace buddy.

This is a man I admired and looked up to. I first met him and his CYO team on the basketball court in St. Anastasia. I loved the way he coached and his competitive nature. Away from the court he was real gentleman. I spent several nights along with a mutual friend visiting his home to listen to his fantastic collection of 45 RPM records. More than just listening he taught us an awful lot about the music of the 50's and early 60's. I moved South 1994 and didn't see him as frequently but every time I traveled back up north I would make a point of seeing him. Jim brings back a lot of great memories; I'm going to miss him.
