Malcolm Platt Obituary

Malcolm Rennie Platt 1922 - 2013 Pomfret - Malcolm Rennie Platt was born June 19, 1922 in the family home in Pomfret, CT. His parent, James Nelson Platt and Eunice Auger Platt were teachers who taught in Palatka, Florida and chose to spend their summers in Connecticut. The family moved to Connecticut permanently and he finished high school in Putnam, CT. Malcolm attended The University of Connecticut and graduated in 1944 with a degree in Engineering. He entered military service in September 1944 during World War II, completed infantry OCS in 1945 and served in the Philippine Islands. He met his wife Margaret (Peggy) while stationed in Manila P.I. They were married in Newark, New Jersey in 1946. After the war years, Malcolm taught engineering at the University of Connecticut and later at the Pittsfield, Massachusetts High School. Mal was recalled to duty during the Korean Conflict and spent two years in Pusan, Korea. He then worked for five years for the Army at Fort Belvoir, Va. as an equipment development engineer. He closed his working career at Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut. He retired in 1986 and spent the rest of his life doing the things he loved most: helping his children and friends with building projects and solving their problems. He loved traveling by car and playing golf. In addition to Peggy, his wife of 66 years, Malcolm will be deeply missed by his daughter Kathleen Ryan and her husband Dr. Raymond Ryan, his daughter Valerie Thompson and her husband David, his son Malcolm Robert Platt and his wife Jeanne, and his daughter Candace Phinney and her husband Donald. In addition he leaves his beloved grandchildren Melissa Carman and her husband Matthew, Amanda Ryan, Candace Janish, Dr. Lisa Beck and her husband Robert, John Powell III and his wife Annie, Heather Platt, Kimberly Platt and Amber Platt. In addition, he leaves behind nine beloved great grandchildren. Malcolm is survived by a brother, James Nelson Platt and his wife Ethel; a cousin, Merritt E. Peck; and a sister-in-law, Mary Beachell. Burial will be in the Abington Cemetery in Abington, Connecticut. Church and Allen Funeral home is in charge of arrangements. There will be no calling hours, but a memorial service will be held at the Newent Congregational Church in Lisbon, Connecticut on Wednesday March 13, 2013 at 4:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Newent Congregational Church where he was an active member for more than 50 years. Malcolm had a wonderful and rewarding life and truly lived the American Dream. His greatest joy was to see his children and grandchildren grow up into the wonderful people they have become. He was extraordinarily proud of them all as they were of him. Please visit www.churchandallen.com to leave an online tribute or condolence.v

Mrs Platt, Bobby, Candy and family: I'm so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. He was such a nice man and I always enjoyed stopping to chat with he and your mom whenever I went for a walk and they were outside tending to the flowers. I only found out when I mentioned something to my mother and she thought it was someone else because it was Pomfret. So Anyway I was so sad to learn it was one of the Platts that I know. I always had great respect for him I'll sure miss the guy. Bobby stop down anytime. Kevin Frederick

I'm so saddened by the passing of Uncle Mal and have you in my thoughts and prayers. He was a such great guy and it is hard to imagine a world without his optimism and good humor. I take comfort in remembering that his indomitable spirit has moved on to a higher calling.

Mrs. Platt: I extend my condolences on Malcolm's death. As a young reporter in the 1960s for the Hartford Times, I remember meeting him in my assignment for the town of Lisbon...he was on some board as I recall--finance or education or some other...A true gentleman...
