To the Shiflett Family,
As a teacher, many lives are touched. The influnce this has on the students may never be known, however, there is no doubt to the fact the Sweeney did have a great impact on many students and athletes. I was blessed to have known him when I lived in Front Royal and worked for the school system.
May all of your many memories be a comfort.

Sweeney will not be forgotten. Our memories are part of his legacy, in stories we pass to our children and grandchildren, in our character forged by his influence on our lives.

May all who knew and loved him find peace here, as we know he has found peace above.

May his memory be eternal.

Dear Family and Friends of the CIOR Team's "Doc" Shiflett: I'm sure “Doc” cared in different ways for everyone reading this. He taped, patched, bandaged and wrapped hundreds of athletes for many years as the Athletic Trainer of the United States Confederation of Interallied Reserve Officers Military Competitions Team. He was the first guy everyone looked for when something needing patching up. And I don't mean just our wounds. He soothed our disappointments and shared in our celebrations. “Doc” deserves credit for many of the fond memories we have of those years. We hosted a bunch of German athletes at Fort Sam Houston, including 10 times world champion Hartmut Nienaber who told us the best part of coming to America was meeting a guy like “Doc.” We all appreciated his professional abilities, but we all cherished his wit and character. To the family...thanks for lending him to us all those summers. To the friends who might not have known the side of him we'll never forget - he was “one of a kind.” “Doc”…you are, and always will be… great medicine for the soul. “Till we meet again.

Thank you, Doc! We shall never forget you.

Without his support, knowledge and great sense of humor I don't think I would have made the team. Doc was a great friend and a great American. What a powerful athletic force! I had the oppurtunity of playing for coach in 1968 and 1969. Skinny, with an obvious lack of knowledge for the game of football and in a matter of one year we were transformed into ahtletic specimens.

With hard work we took a rag tag team of wannabees and became a team that was to be reckoned with. Not in a million years could this have been accomplished without the strict and caring tutelage of Lawrence Shifflett. To this very day the man has left an indelible impression on my life. I will never ever forget him or the experience.

I know he is in a better place.

God bless "The Coach" and his family.

November 7, 2011

I had the honor and privilege to know Mr. Shiflett for over 30 years. I always admired how organized Sweeney was as a coach and as an athletics director. When you think of Warren County High School sports and you have followed the Wildcats for years, the first name that comes to mind is Lawrence "Sweeney" Shiflett. He was the Face of the Warren County Wildcats. I know Sweeney cared about athletes, both boys and girls. He would show the same interest, and this can be backed by the fact that not only did Mr. Shiflett coach football at WCHS but he also started the softball program there. There was no state tournament back in the mid- to late-1970s, but Sweeney coached the girls to regional championships in both 1976 and 1977. I think it is safe to say that many of his colleagues throughout the Northwestern District, Region II, and Group AA held Mr. Shiflett with high regard. I know I did, and he was always very helpful to me whenever I needed some information on Warren County teams that I covered as a sports reporter. I also know that Sweeney and his wife enjoyed following their grandchildren when they had athletic events. They were always there. My condolences go out to the Shiflett family and my wife Cathy and I will keep you in our prayers.

My sympathy to the Shiflett family and to the community that feels this great loss. I and many people crossed paths with this great man and he was an awesome human being. He touched so many lives through the years. My late husband Joel Moyer spoke very highly of Mr. Shiflett also. I remember himvery well he was my drivers Ed teacher. When I did my behind the wheel, even tho I was a nervous wreck, he told me not to worry about it I was doing fine. And as I was paralell parking, someone on the street yelled "give her an A," and he did! Rest in Peace Coach, you will be greatly missed. Shelly Ebersole Moyer, Mt. Airy Md (formerly Front Royal)

Patty, Terry, Paige and Mrs. Shifflett,
I have such fond memories of having Sweeeney as my softball coach in 1976 and 1977. He had a knack for not only teaching us the game, but for making us believe in ourselves and that we could accomplish anything. He turned a good group of softball players into Regional Champions two years in a row and we had a blast. I know that he gave us all his best and he will be forever in our hearts. He's now gone from his life on earth, but he'll always be watching over you. RIP Coach Shifflett you were the best!

November 7, 2011

Terry and family,
Coach Shiflett was an icon in our school and in the community. He taught (me) Driver's Ed but I remember him most at the HS football games. He came to our 25th reunion in 2000 and he had hardly changed from how I remembered him.

Your family was blessed to have a father/husband that was as terrific as he was - you just have to give him back now. May your hearts be healed knowing you'll meet again some day. Deepest sympathy in your time of grief.

I admired Coach Shiflett. He was a man of composure, respect, patience and faith and a good role model for all who knew him. His legacy will live forever in those that knew and cared greatly for him. We will miss you Coach.

Helen and Family,

Doc was the man of broad shoulders whom we admired, relied upon to keep us competing when injured and provided us his respected honest opinion when we, in later years as coaches, selected the CIOR Team. He was Burke Christensen's and my golfing partner and his athletic ability amazed us. Doc's is a CIOR legacy that will live as long as Team members are living.

What a man and what an example for young people! He could have been a success at at any profession he chose and to the benefit of thousands of Warren County children, the Lord led him to return home to influence the lives of Warren County's children. His reward in Heaven is assured and although we mourn his passing as a community, his example of a life dedicated to children will live on for all who knew him or are reminded of him each year when a new group of Warren County graduates are added to the Hall so appropriately named in his honor.
