Pearl Bushemi Obituary
Pearl C. Bushemi (nee Maranto), age 95, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2012. Pearl is survived by her children and their families: John and Betty Bushemi and children, Amanda and Cara; Teresa and Jim Procter and children, Carolina and Jimmy; Jim and Missy Bushemi and children, Sam, Claire and Joseph; Ellen Schlatter and children, Alyssa (Kraig) Keys and Ryan; and Liz Bushemi; sisters-in-law: Mary Ellen Cessna and Mary Bushemi; cousins in Lascari and Cefalu, Sicily; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by husband, Sam; parents: Vincenzo and Teresina Maranto; sisters: Mary Valenzuela, Genevieve Sacco, and Frances Eilers; brothers: Anthony Maranto, Melo Maranto, and Dante Maranto. Pearl was born March 16, 1916 in Gary, IN and grew up in East Hazel Crest, IL where she attended grade school and Thornton Township High School. She worked for the Illinois Motor Club in Chicago and at the Harvey Restaurant. From 1968 until 1983, she worked for the Lake County Assessor. Pearl was active in many local organizations: Lake County and State Federation of Mothers of Twins, Business and Professional Women, American Cancer Society, St. Mark Parent-Teacher Association, Arch-confraternity of Women at St. Mark Parish, American Legion Post 214, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6921, Marine Corps League, Andrean Parents' Club, Merrillville Neighborhood Watch, Merrillville - Ross Township Democratic Club, Lake County Women's Democratic Club, 55 Club, Daughters of Isabella Circle 359, Principessa di Piemonte Lodge 53, Stardust Bowling League, Ss. Peter & Paul Parish, Indiana General Assembly Women's Club, Broadfield Homeowner's Association, and Merrillville Democratic Precinct Organization as a committeewoman for many years. Funeral prayers will be said on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 9:45 a.m. at Geisen Funeral Home, 7905 Broadway, Merrillville followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 5885 Harrison St., Merrillville with Rev. Joseph E. Vamos officiating. Interment to follow at Mt. Mercy Cemetery, Gary. Friends may visit with the family Friday, January 27, 2012 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Geisen Funeral Home, Merrillville. A Prayer Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Ss. Peter & Paul Building Fund or a charity of choice in Pearl's memory. To the Bushemi family on behalf of your loving matriarc Pearl. I recall Pearl from several years past. A wonderful lady. My 95 year old papa, Tony Rizzo Sr., now in a nursing facility. Still has his memory. He remembered Pearl and the entire family, and shared some old stories of all the old Italian families who started in Ellis Is. NY and migrated to the midwest and ultimately Gary, In. From our hearts we send you prayers and thoughts this day. May she be with God and His Angels. God bless you all. The Rizzos. To the Bushemi Family,
What a family lead by a wonderful Lady. She was so proud of her family and their accomplishments. I am saddened by the loss of Pearl it is an end of an era. I have so many fond memories of Pearl; from the bank, from Pat Widing, from politics and political functions. Just thinking of them brings a smile. She was a grand Lady, she will be missed by not only her family but by many many more people. Bless you Pearl you were a good women.
