This broke my heart to read. Mr. Sweigart was my principal at Barker, and then counselor at Elston. This man is the very reason I was able to graduate, as he supported me, even when I was out of Elston, and at MCHS. One of a kind, and great man he was. I was lucky to have such an amazing man be a guidance for me, and support me. My prayers are with his family and friends in this difficult time.

Dear Sweigart family: We are sorry sorry for your loss. Nick is a one-of-a-kind man. We will think of him everytime the Cardinals play baseball. God's Peace

Nick was a lot of things to me: He was my principal when I was a student at Kankakee Valley H.S.; a counselor to my students at Elston Middle School; a Cardinal foe; (I'm a Cubs fan) but most of all, a good friend. Years back, when I was living in Crown Point, I once caught a ride to Michigan City with Nick. We made it from CP to MC in 34 minutes! Nick, swerving in and out of traffic, no seat belt, me...hanging on and praying for my life! Nick was one of a kind. I will miss him dearly. R.I.P. Mr. Sweigart.

Nick, I cannot tell you what a pleasure it was to work with you at Elston Middle School. You were a "tell it like it is" kind of guy who was willing to counsel teachers just as much as you counselled students. I will never forget your spirit regarding your favorite team, the Cardinals. You will certainly be missed. Rest in peace.

I love you to pieces too Daddy as were your last words to me. We had a rough start when you first came into my life. However through the years you became my rock and always supported me in all my decisions. You were a great listener and always gave me good advice. Also you could always calm me down no matter how upset I was and make me laugh when it was over. I love you and I'm happy that you are at peace now. I will miss you terribly... Your patty -cake

Nick was my friend, our families were close and we stuck together no matter the situation. We were professional partners but more than that we had some great times together.
When we first started working together he and his family were living in M'ville and we went over to visit they had a dog, a barkless Banshee, I think. The first time we visited that dog bit me That's how our friendship began. When I was a principal and he was my dean of students we went to St Louis to the World Series, couldn't get a room so we slept in our station wagon underneath the Interstate. When we woke up he complained about my snoring, said it was louder than the trucks overhead.
Lastly, whenever we would be together and he would leave he would always part by saying: Good bye Big Guy, I love you.
Good Bye my Friend

I had Nick for a General Business class @ Lew Wallace where we learned how to write a proper check, listen to a humorous teacher teach, and that it was ok to chew gum in his class...as long as we didn't stick it under the desk when done. He was also our freshman baseball coach, a wonderful guy to have lunch with, and one who was always ready to go with that sly wit.

So sorry to get the news. Shirlee, I'm so glad you had each other. I can still picture the first day you visited Barker. I was in the hall by my room and you were both rounding the corner from the front hall. He introduced us and made a "Nick" comment about my keeping him on his toes, alluding to my being a building rep. We appreciated the fact we both could say what we felt, yet still have respect for each other.

My heart is reaching out to the entire family and especially my old school friend..Patty. As a kid...Mr. Sweigart's authoritarian image at Taft Junior High was a little intimidating to a young teen but I prefer to look back at some of the conversations we shared in the Sweigart house...that is when Mr. Sweigart turned into my girlfriend's dad who listened when I talked and that was pretty nice indeed!

I have fond memories of Nick. I remember his good sense of humor from my times as a student at Taft to later years when we would see him officiating games that our sons were playing in. I still have the Steve Carlton autograph he and my dad got at the World Series for me. I enjoyed the time that I spent at the Sweigart home with Patty and family. My prayers are with you all.

Great friend, fellow teacher, teammate, great point guard (even made me look good now and then), fellow sports official, Cardinals fan (baseball, not the Chicago Cardinals football team), Chicago Bears fan, terrible golfer (like me), keen observer of the human condition, great sense of the humor in life, all around good guy (even though he'd make me laugh at the wrong time; e.g., during faculty meetings).
The kids at Lew Wallace would wait by the entrance to watch us each invite the other to go through the entrance first, then both go at the same time and get stuck in the doorway - our own Laurel & Hardy routine. Always got a few laughs.
I'll miss him always.
