AUSTIN COLYER Obituary

COLYER--Austin T., Of New York, NY, passed away on June 25, 2015. Austin was born on October 29, 1930, in Brooklyn, NY. His long and storied career spanned eight Broadway shows, including "Singin' In the Rain," "I Remember Mama," "Pal Joey," "Desert Song," and "Maggie Flynn." Austin also appeared in countless regional and national productions, including joining the national touring company of "Ragtime" for more than three years. Beyond his illustrious work on the stage, Austin's wit, charm, and encyclopedic knowledge of all things theatrical never failed to make a deep and lasting impression on all who knew him. As recently profiled in The New York Times, Austin was a resident of The Whitby on West 45th Street for more than 50 years, and was a pillar of his community and mentored many young actors. A man of many talents, Austin also served in the United States Army Air Corps. Austin was a fixture in the lives of his family and many friends, and while we truly thought he would be here with us always, he has left each who knew him with the deepest and most joyous memories. A wake will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, from 2-5pm and 7-9pm at the Crestwood Funeral Home at 445 West 43rd Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday morning, July 1, 2015, at 10:30am at St. Malachy's Roman Catholic Church (the Actor's Church) at 239 West 49th Street, between 8th Avenue and Broadway. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Actors Fund in Austin's memory.

Austin, I can't say how sad this makes me. You were my first friend when this scared kid from South Philly got his first professional job with the Music Fairs back in 1958. You went to great pains to help me not feel an outsider or, worse, an interloper in the cast of so many talented people. I especially remember taking you home for some nice Italian meals my mom made. She loved you so much and always asked after you. I''m so glad my wife Donna had a chance to meet you in Ottawa when you were on the road. We both shed some tears today.

Austin made me laugh at many a tense moment on the Board of the Actors Union (A.E.A.). his smile always seem to enter the room before he did. I am saddened to read of his death but sit here with a smile on my face for knowing him ... Mark Ski

It was a joy to spend so many summers with you at Mountain Playhouse. A great theatrical soul. Funny, tart, sassy! I learned so much just being in rehearsal with you. A standing ovation to a real trooper.
