CATHERINE GAISMAN Obituary

GAISMAN--Catherine. The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine of the Mt. Sinai Medical Center is shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Mrs. Catherine Giasman, our champion and partner for more than 40 years. She was strong and caring. She was honest and wise. Her exemplory life was the product of her devotion to her church, education as a nurse, service with the Mt. Sinai Army Hospital in North Africa during World War II, and with her husband Henry Gaisman, the support of patients at the Mt. Sinai Medical Center. Her legacy includes the Gaisman operating theatre, the Gaisman Division of Pulmanary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and the Gaisman fellowship. While intensely devoted to traditional values, she understood and supported advances in modern medicine by endowing the first professorial chair in palliative medicine and the new state of the art auditorium and classrooms for students of the Mt. Sinai Medical School. Her first question always was "What do you need to improve patient care?" Our deepest sympathies are offered to her devoted, supportive family. We share your enormous void.
