Linda Gerard Obituary

1938 - 2014
Born Linda Sue Albert in Trenton, NJ, Gerard attended Finch College and studied at the American Theater Wing. Upon moving to NYC she was signed by the William Morris Agency. Gerard was renowned for her tremendous singing voice and acting talent. In the 1960's she was chosen to be Barbra Streisand's stand-by in the role of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl on Broadway. Linda toured as Fanny Brice in the road company of the show and then she returned to NY to a career that spanned television, stage, night clubs and cabaret as a sought after and much loved performer. In 1976, she moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts and was co-owner of the Pied Piper, one of only a handful of women's bars in the country. Gerard's fan base grew exponentially and she became known far and wide for her performances and larger than life persona. Gerard's next successful venture was as owner of the Rose Tattoo in West Hollywood, CA.
In the early 1990's, Gerard relocated to Palm Springs where she was a member of the cast of the Palm Springs Follies. This chapter of her life included her iconic performances at the Ace Hotel as the "singing hostess of Sissy Bingo" developing yet another devoted fan base.
She is survived by her adoring twin daughters, Cynthia and Regina Binder, her former husband and friend, Gerard Binder, brother Jeffrey Albert, niece Nikki and nephews John and Timothy, her long time and dearest friend Pam Genevrino and many other loving friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Orphan Pet Oasis or Palm Springs Animal Shelter. Celebrations of her life will take place later this spring in Palm Springs, New York City and in Provincetown this summer.

Linda will always be important in my life's development. She was the independent minded talented cousin who we looked to for inspiration regarding the preforming arts. Her New York Theatre involvement helped me to understand the hard work that was necessary to make it on Broadway. She loved to entertain, either singing, acting or joking around. Loved by all who met her and experienced her gregarious nature. There will always be a missing piece in my life since she passed away. Rest in peace Linda.

I met Linda in the early 90's here in Palm Springs. I had a homecleaning service in which I became her housekeeper, eventually, we realized we hit it off really well and she asked me to move in with her.
I learned so much from her and our long conversations into the night were always deep in my heart. She was a true friend and always offered to help in all ways if ever needed.
Her furbabies, Frazier, Lady and I can't quire remember the 3rds name, would always sing when she conducted a song they loved her and she, them immensely. We moved 2 or 3 times until her final home in Palm Springs.
I eventually moved out due to a different career move and we stayed in touch the best we could, without cell phones back then. After awhile later, we found each other again and I surprised her at The Ace Hotel while she was hostessing. Boy, was she surprised!
At that time, I had no idea of her illness, I don't think she wanted me to know, to sadden me...she cared of my feelings, always.
I'll always remember her as a beautiful soul and was honored to accompany her to sing with The Philharmonic Orchestra in Los Angels! That was one of her most sought after dreams.
She nailed it that evening g.
I was broken to hear of her passing just 3 months after we reunited...we had so much to catch up on.
R.I.P. my sweet Linda

Linda, my cousin, is a reminder to me that nothing is accomplished in life without determination, hard work, a sense of humor and a good attitude to those around you. She disarmed people she met with her smile, poise and talent to make others smile too. Remembered always as a giving individual and delight to be around. Rest in peace.

I first meet Linda in 1976, my first year also in Provencetown. I also remember going to Brookline Mass. to hear her in the piano bar. I had an autographed album that I misplaced when I moved in 2010. I wish I could find her music somewhere, so I could listen to her and bring back memories of those wonderful years.

I used to go to Provincetown in the 70's just to see Linda. I had a signed album of her songs. Unfortunitly it was missplaced during a move. I wish I could listen to her again. She will be sadly missed. To hear this today was such a shock.

I was so sad to here this news about Linda Gerard. I remember how I found your phone number and called you up from New York. You were so nice to me on the phone and how we talked about some of the shows you did in the mid 70's. I finished the tape you wanted of The magic of Jolson...you did that show in 1975 with Norman Brooks. I will always treasure the phone conversation we had. Again, so sad to here this news.

I first met Linda in Provincetown, MA when I was doing an internship at the Provincetown Playhouse in the mid-70's. I fell in love with her instantly! She brought me to New York and helped me start my career as a theatrical agent. I lived with her family and took care of her amazing twin daughters, Ginny and Cindy. I became part of her family. She was the most generous, loving and gifted singer/soul I had ever met! She supported me and inspired me to achieve more than I ever imagined. She was a champion of all people and causes near and dear to her heart and an angel sent down to earth to watch over the many people that needed her and were blessed enough to be in her life. Heaven now has embraced a life force whose light will shine forever. "When all is said and done, what we had could never end. You'll always be my friend" With love and gratitude..RJ

I first met Linda in the early 80's when I went with a friend (girl singer that I played piano for) to Provincetown, MA. We went to Linda's show at the Pied Piper one night and ended up going back so many times she finally came over and talked to us. Linda became a special friend to me. Not only were we roomies for a while, but I worked in her restaurant/club The Rose Tattoo - in the heyday of that club when it was THE place to be. Linda gave SO many singers and pianists and comics the greatest room in the world to perform in and made it hard for any other club owner because nobody nurtured their talent like Linda did. My favorite part of the whole relationship was playing piano for her. She was one of the greatest performers of all time. And those are "forever" memories that I will keep with me for the rest of my life. RIP, dear generous giving beautiful talented friend.

I lived with Linda in the late 80's...she was one of the most generous, caring and talented people I've had the good fortune to have known. I think of her often and wish her safe passage.

Linda was my cousin and introduction to the performing arts as a young boy in Trenton, NJ. Her ability to "light up a room" that she entered is well known to anyone who met her. Always "up beat" full of energy, a joy to be around. Watching her perform on Broadway as understudy in FUNNY GIRL was a huge thrill for me. She lived and breathed for the performing arts. I am a better person for knowing her and miss her very much. My Broadway Star and inspiration to never give up for the things you want to accomplish in life. She's performing now in the great beyond somewhere. Break a leg Linda...

I have such good memories of working with Linda ("Linda Bin Dere Done Dat" was her nickname!) in the food and beverage industry in the Valley. She had a new pair of glasses for each day, and would burst into song at the drop of a hat. If you have not had the pleasure of listening to Linda's version of "My Funny Valentine", you have missed a good thing in this life!

I spoke with Linda on March 16th, the last of a multitude of calls exchanged during a friendship that began in 1941 at Adath Israel Synagogue when we were three. We laughed, exchanged memories, and vowed to meet again in the great poker room in the sky surrounded by friends and pianos and guitars. I raise a glass to her courage and for a life well lived. She will be missed!

I wish I'd known that she was in Provincetown; I was there & would have liked the opportunity to admire her talents. To clarify: This is Rita Albert Allen, daughter of Sam & Bunny Albert, granddaughter of Jacob and Sarah Albert. Linda's grandfather, Israel, was the brother of my grandfather.

For us 'boys'of model year 1938, Linda was the EVERYTHING we wanted in our first real girlfriend.
Smart, pretty, talented beyond anything we ever knew and, above all, she was FUN personified.
And that memory for many of us is her legacy- from 65 years ago'til this very day.
She was going to follow her dream and, apparently, did just that.
Good for her.
May she rest in peace.
