Dear Sokolows,
I just found out about Marty's passing and I am so sorry to hear of it. Your dad was so much fun and always made those boring middle school meetings entertaining for me. Dad and he were such good friends and I will miss them both for a very long time. All my best to the three of you. Nancy

Mr. Sokolow was one of the best teachers I ever had. He had extremely high standards, but he also had confidence in his students' ability to meet those standards, and that made for a powerful combination. I have forgotten some of the history he taught, alas, but I bet I still remember half the stories he told. Most of all I remember his love of teaching. I'm very grateful to him.

I have warm and wonderful memories of Mr. Sokolow and his classroom. He was one of my first teachers at Horace Mann and one of the best--always inspiring, funny, brilliant and encouraging. He truly loved history and was able to convey that love to students who might otherwise never have felt its magic. With gratitude, Amy Schwartz '80

Mr. Sokolow's history classes were one of the highlights of my days at HM. I feel fortunate to have been shaped by him. After all these years, I can still picture him in the front of his classroom, and I remember him fondly.

Marty was my father Asa's cousin and his spitting image. He was a true mensch. May his memory be for a blessing.

He was one of a kind, a true class act. I have always been grateful to him for the high standards he set for us. I learned so much from him and have thought of him fondly so often over the years. He represented the absolute best of Horace Mann.

Dear Mike, Jane, and Tony -

I will tell you what you already know. Your dad was a wonderful teacher and mentor. He gave me an enduring love of history, and an enduring respect for integrity. At a very important moment in my junior year, he helped me find the courage and confidence to stand up for myself when someone was trying to beat me down.

I'm grateful that I had the chance to speak with him last year, just to say thank you. I grieve with you at his passing and my family will keep yours in our prayers.

What a lovely man! I enjoyed knowing him as a student at HM in the late 70's.

Mr. Sokolow was a wonderful teacher and mentor. He expected the best of all of us and gave us a sense of pride in our work. He was dignified and confident and witty and made history fun. I can see his grin in my imagination! I believed in my abilities to be a good student through my experiences as his advisee and in his classes. I credit my success in college and beyond to the example he set.

I remember Marty with affection.
We were classmates at both Horace Mann and Yale ; both children of the Upper West side. Our kinship and friendship was made more enduring during those years as we had both lost our fathers while at Horace Mann.l
From reading the tributes it is apparent that he made his mark upon those he taught.
I send my condolences and deepest sympathy to his family.

Dear Mike, Jane, and Tony,

I was saddened to hear of your father's death. Please accept my sympathy. I remember both of your parents with admiration and fondness. Your father gave me the opportunity to play "paddle tennis" and always kept your Wilton home open to all friends! It would be wonderful to re-connect, Jane. Please email me at jbjtampabay@aoll if you would like to chat!

With sympathy,

It was Mr. Sokolow, along with two other charismatic upper school History teachers at HM, who inspired me to go into teaching myself. A third of a century after having been in his class, moments of having been there are still vivid to me.-- James Bloom, Salem International College, Germany

Mr. Sokolow was an incredible teacher who imparted in his students (including me) a great appreciation for history. His is a lasting legacy of learning. I vividly remember, more than 25 years later, his descriptions of Reverend Billy Sunday ("Score one for the Lord, Brother"), and his waxing eloquent on the merits and demerits of the thesis that American history could be explained through the lens of the Westward expansion.

Mr. Sokolow was my favorite teacher at HM or anywhere else I went to school. He seemed to know everything about everything, and had great judgment. He also led a truly exemplary life in all respects: family, service to the community, to country, and in business. I admired him greatly. His family has my condolensces and should know how wide of a positive impact he had.

March 14, 2013

Mr. Sokolow was the most memorable person in my days at HM. I can remember all the times I appeared at his classroom door asking for his advice, his guidance. He would stop everything to help and give me his wisdom-filled words of support. I don't believe I would have made it through those years without him. What an amazing mentor. Thank you so very much for being there Mr S....you will be missed. Lee

Mr Sokolow taught me how to think critically and always challenged me... as a ninth grader! He supported my decision to leave h.m. to go away to prep school. I always thought it funny that I became a history major at Yale, maybe following in his footsteps. A very important man in my life, and a true gentleman. A class act.

March 13, 2013

Marty Sokolow was my brother, Joe Rogers, beloved history teacher. He has quoted him more than his Harvard or MIT professors. Marty Sokolow mentored me as a first year history teacher at Horace Mann. He always spoke lovingly of his family and late wife and always shared lovely memories of my brother. God Bless you Mr. Sokolow. Condolences to his family, friends and other colleagues.

I am writing from New Zealand, where I am greatly saddened to hear about your loss. Mr Sokolow was a friend, mentor and teacher of mine at Horace Mann. I took every class I could from Mr Sokolow, who inspired me and countless others to learn about and explore the world around us. I think of him often, and will think of his family today.
