It's hard to believe that such a great man has gone to a better place. I will miss him and everything he was about.

My deepest condolences go out to all of Bob's family and friends. Bob and I worked together on environmental projects here in Jerusalem, focusing on building rainwater harvesting systems in schools in East Jerusalem. His work with the Water Resources Action Project and Friends of the Earth Middle East improved the lives of many people, especially the children of the region.
I admired Bob's dedication and organizational skills, which he used wisely. Trying to solve problems in Jerusalem is extremely difficult, but Bob was undeterred by obstacles. All of the many people he worked with here, including Professor Richard Laster from the Laster Gouldman Law Offices, Fuad Abu Hamed and Khaled Abu Khaff from the Al Quds Dialogue Center and Only Green Environmental Center, the staff of the Afaq School and Sur Baher Girls School, and many many more friends and colleagues, convey their condolences to a true friend and partner. His memory will inspire us to continue striving for a better world.

While I didn't know Bob, I am very familiar with his Practical Guide to US Transfer Pricing. As a specialist in transfer pricing, formerly at a Big 4 firm and currently with the IRS, I reference that publication regularly. And I'm certainly grateful that Bob brought together the thought leaders in our profession for this important reference.

To Bob Cole: you will be sorely missed. From the very beginning: you treated me with great dignity and respect. I will always be grateful for your kind gestures and words of wisdom.

I knew Bob personally for only the past few years, in connection with FoEME, although, because I used to work in the tax field, I had known of him by reputation for many years. I'm sure that much will be said and written about his high achievements and his extraordinary personal qualities. Of course, his ability to work what he described as two full-time jobs, the IRS and FoEME, into his 81st year are little short of superhuman. And the fact that he wanted to do both jobs at that time of life – to improve the international tax field and to contribute to the cause of peace in the Middle East -- are profoundly inspiring.

But there is one quality in particular that I want to remember here, and that is his humility. In working on some FoEME projects with him, I realized that had I not known him by reputation, I would never have guessed that he was so accomplished. He was unfailingly respectful, even though no one I saw him with had achieved more than he did. He was genuinely pleased with, and grateful for, any work anyone else did, even though no one seemed to work harder than he did. He was genuinely delighted and encouraging when anyone else offered ideas, even though no one was smarter than he was. Even with my limited contact, I could tell that he brought out the best in others. He was unassuming and modest about material things, all the way down to preferring public transportation. There was nothing practiced about his modesty – it was completely genuine – and I think it must have been as much a part of him as his exceptional intellect and discipline, but I want to remember it here because it is such a fine quality and one that is so rare.

I wish I had known him better, and I wish I had known him longer, but I am glad to have known him as I did. I knew him well enough to recognize that here was a wonderful role model.

May his memory be for a blessing, and may the family be comforted among the mourners of Zion.
