ARTHUR BANK Obituary

Bank--Arthur, MD, Professor Emeritus of Medicine and of Genetics and Development at Columbia University, where he was until his retirement the Director of the Division of Hematology in the Department of Medicine, died in New York City on February 27, 2014. Dr. Bank was an internationally recognized leader and major contributor in the field of hematology research. Over the more than 40 years of his research career as a molecular biologist, he published extensively on the pathophysiology, on the protein and genetic levels, of Cooley's anemia, also known as beta thalassemia; on the mechanisms of human gene regulation; and on human gene therapy. He chaired several international meetings on Cooley's anemia, and served as Vice President for Medical Affairs of the Cooley's Anemia Foundation. He continued his substantial contributions to the Foundation serving on its Medical Advisory Board and Scientific Review Committee. The Foundation remembers him with great warmth, enduring respect, and gratitude for all the advances that he brought forth and his generous concern for each patient. We extend our condolences to his wife Rona, his sons David and Michael, and his three grandchildren.

Dear Family:

I was very sorry to hear/read of Art's death. We were heals completely, bu tclassmates at HMS Class of 1960. What I remember best was someone who was very bright and humorous, and was a dedicated New Yorker as well as a very special physician. Sorrow never heals completely, but time helps.

Dear Rona and family,

I was sorry to hear of Arthur's passing. He was an outstanding colleague. Our labs were on the same floor in Hammer for many years. He is missed!

My sincerest sympathy,
Rodney Rothstein

Arthur was a terrific person! We share a cabana at the whitehall for many years and i always enjoyed speaking to him! he recently gave me his latest book about his life! We also worked together one summer in the Catskill mountains! I was also a member of a committe at Columbia[biosafety] that he chaired! I will miss him!
