RICHARD ROOB Obituary

Roob--Richard. On June 2, 2014, age 81, of New York City died peacefully at home. A tall, gentle soul, Richard was deeply devoted to Rona, his beloved wife of 52 years. Richard enhanced the lives everyone who was privileged to know him and brought great joy to his two daughters and their husbands, Nancy Roob and Lukas Weinstein and Helen and Marc Jerome, and his five grandchildren: Hanna, Ella, Sophie, Lucy and Sam. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Richard was a lifelong learner who loved nothing more than reading, the arts and spending time with his family. A graduate of Poly Prep, Hamilton College and Columbia Law School, he joined Benjamin Moore & Co. as general counsel in 1976 and was elected Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1984, retiring in 2000. He also served as board member and Chairman of Studio in a School from 1996 until 2014. Services will take place on Thursday, June 5 at 3:00 p.m. at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Studio in a School or the Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College.

Richard had high moral standards and held others accountable for their actions. Benjamin Moore was a much better place for his leadership. Today´s absence of morals at the highest level of government would distress and perplex him.
I remember his directive to do the right thing as a guiding light.

We could use more people like Richard as corporate governance becomes more and more lax.

We need more leaders who have Richard’s collaborative and inclusive management approach. He was also decisive when it counted.

Richard Roob was at the helm of Benjamin Moore & Co. during a most difficult and trying period. His calm and intelligent demeanor helped set a new direction for the company. He will be greatly missed by all of us who had the privilege to interact with him.
Our heartfelt sympathy to Rona and family.

Mr. Roob was a wonderful communicator who possessed an equal passion for the company and for the people who brought the company to life.

Richard was an exceptional human being and a great leader. It was my pleasure to work with him and the management team over the course of six years. His passion for knowledge had interesting twists. He often said that he reason he asked questions was to make sure that "people knew what they were doing". I think that his personal interest in their success was the main reason. I will miss him. While I was employed with Benjamin Moore & Co. I had the opportunity to personally meet Richard when he became General Counsel for the company. He had a compassion to always like every employee and particularly enjoyed being among all who were in attendance at the many Sales Meetings. My deepest sympathies for the family during this time of sorrow.

Richard was a great leader, especially when Benjamin Moore needed a man with vision and conviction during the reorganization times. Personally Richard was a man of great compassion a friend to all in the company and I am privileged to have had the opportunity to work with him on a daily basis as a colleague, trusted friend and advisor. May he rest in peace.
