I was so sorry to hear of the loss of Dr. Helfgott! Even though he left UT Houston Ob/Gyn a long time ago he left a wonderful lasting impression on those of us still here who remember his fun upbeat personality! My prayers and condolences go out to his family.

Andy was a good friend of my fathers. Whenever he would come in town I would ask my dad "That's your cool friend right? The one with the ear ring?"I thought he was so cool with his swagger, cigars, and laid back attitude. Andy and I shared a passion for Hurricanes Football. Once I was old enough I would go to as many games as I could, and would often see Andy. The Canes family will never be the same without Andy. RIP dear friend.

I first met Andy over the telephone when I returned his call and got his voice message. It ended with "Go Canes." When I finally reached him, I said the Canes were not doing so well that year and he should really consider changing the message or even picking another team. He laughed and said "no way Wash." That was the way he was, when he set his mind to do something, he did it and you could depend on him.
Another memory is when we met in Tallahassee one day in the fall to attend the Noles/Canes game or as he would say the Canes/Noles game. He loved those Canes. We tail-gated, shared advice, told stories, probably some lies, ate and had one or two drinks all in the heavy pouring rain. I really forgot who won the game (probably the Noles) but it was a good, memorable and enjoyable day away from our many tasks and just with friends. We were buddies. He talked frequently about many of his hopes and desires. We were also confidants as his successful career which was shortened way to soon moved along.
Andy also loved his wife and children and made many many sacrifices for them along the way just so they would be cared for and comfortable. He talked about the long trip on weekends from St. Petersburg to Georgia to see and be with them but he did it for his family.
Andy loved and cared also for the SMFM. Many of us nominated, voted and supported him to become a Board member. He was so pleased when he made it. So where many of us. I sure am pleased now that he received that honor. He showed that he deserved it through his hard work and program planning. He so much wanted to make the 2015 meeting but God had other plans. He is gone far to soon and will be missed as well as his caring spirit, work, advice and encouragement by many of us.
It is a sad day. Rest well friend forever. Go Canes!!
Until we meet again,
Wash
