JULIETTE ELIAS Obituary

ELIAS--Juliette Simon,

passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 17, 2017. Juliette made it to her 100th year leaving us at 99 years and three months. She was born November 18, 1917 in Bagdad, Iraq to Amouma and Hayawi Simon. Juliette was an elegant and dynamic woman who lived a splendid and glorious life. She was kind, curious, loving and affectionate while always remaining modest and unpretentious. She was oblivious to the radiance she cast wherever she went and with whomever she met. Juliette recalled to the end her Baghdad childhood where she loved roaming in the family gardens near the Tigris River. She relished her education in England and Beirut where she excelled. Juliette came to New York in April 1948 with her husband, Albert and her two daughters, Sylvia and Norma. For 69 years she delighted in the freedom and opportunities in America and never looked back. She remains a role model for her independent spirit, incomperable optimism and the unique way she lived her life. Juliette was very special to everyone, especially her immediate family. Juliette and Albert were married 52 years until his death in 1993. She spent the next 24 years enriching herself culturally and intellectually, including much travel, always sharing her knowledge and adventures with family and friends. She was an ideal mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a devoted friend to many leaving behind an indelible mark. She survived all of her adult siblings: David, Jamil, Abdallah and Maurice Simon and her sister, Rachel Sopher. Juliette leaves behind her daughter Sylvia and husband Robert Elman, and her other daughter Norma Elias and her husband Matthew Toby. She was the adoring grandmother of Mark Elman and wife Daviela Eckols, Wendy Anderson and fiance Jim Milligan, Valerie Batchelder and husband Chuck. Sadly missing their great-grandmother are her five precious great-grand- children, Lisel and Simon Anderson, Caroline and Kate Batchelder and Adrian Elman. Also missing Juliette is Nana Dokhnadze her caregiver and devoted friend of seven years who helped enrich and prolong Juliette's life. We will not see the likes of our beloved Juliette again. Funeral service will be held 10am, Tuesday, February 21 at "The Riverside" 76 Street and Amsterdam Ave.

Juliette will be sorely missed by those of us who knew her as an intrepid member of our exercise class and an indomitable walker along Broadway. We were always so happy to encounter one another for a chat on the street. She remains a vibrant and luminous presence for me.
