JOSEPH TANENBAUM Obituary

TANENBAUM--Joseph,

93, passed away the morning of May 11th, while recovering from hip surgery at the Little Neck Rehabilitation Center. He attended NYU for both his undergraduate studies and law school, where he enrolled pursuant to the GI Bill after serving his country in China during World War II. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for his service. He was an attorney for over 60 years and maintained his license throughout his life, even after his retirement. Joseph was born in 1923, the second of three children to Solomon and Augusta Tanenbaum, in an apartment above his parents' Tanenbaum's Department Store on Bell Boulevard in Bayside. That apartment later became his law office, and the Tanenbaum Law Office is still located at that same address. He was a member of the first graduating class at the then-new Bayside High School. He married Bernice Belmont in 1953, and is survived by Bernice, their four sons, Seth (Deborah), Mark, Daniel (Esther) and Richard (Karin), their ten grandchildren, Molly (Ian), Jessica (Peter), Gregory, Noah, Kasey, Charlotte, Sam, Lea, Theodore, and Miranda, a great-grandson, Oscar, as well as his brother Bernard (Beverly). His parents and his sister, Bertha Fiedler (Henry) predeceased. He was on the board and a Guardian of the American Technion Society and traveled to Israel with Bernice on numerous occasions. At the Technion in Haifa, there exists The Joseph and Bernice Tanenbaum Dormitory as well as a Chair in preventative medicine. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the Board of Flushing Hospital, as longtime President and lifetime trustee of the Samuel Field YM-YWHA in Little Neck, where there now exists the Joseph and Bernice Tanenbaum Family Pool, and as a past Judge Advocate for the Jewish War Veterans. He practiced law in Bayside with his sons, Mark and Richard (and Daniel for a short time) and truly believed in the rule of law. He was an avid art collector as well as an active and savvy real estate investor. He loved to take long walks and play tennis and golf, and even walked the golf course into his mid seventies. Donations may be made to the American Technion Society or the Samuel Field YM-YWHA.

Bernice, Seth, Mark, Daniel, and Richard:

I read the obituary in SUnday's New York Times, and am writing to let you know that you are each and all in my prayers at this diffficult time. As a child growing up in Bayside, I remember fondly the annual shopping trips to the Tanenbaum store on Bell Boulevard. As a lawyer and a son of a WW II combat veteran, I appreciate Joseph's life of service to family, to the causes of justice and healing, and to country. May you find some comfort in his legacy of service to the greater good. Until we are all reunited in a time and place that knows no leavetaking, may the Lord watch over you and keep you close.
