ALAN LEVENSTEIN Obituary

LEVENSTEIN--Alan,

died peacefully at 81 from complications of pancreatic cancer on November 6th, surrounded by Gail, his adored wife of 54 years, and his treasured children, Miranda, Jessica, and Tony. A 1956 graduate of Amherst College and a die-hard liberal in Saville Row suits, Alan cut a dashing, dynamic figure during his 40 years as an advertising executive. After retiring as Vice Chairman and Chief Strategy Officer at Bozell Worldwide in 1999, Alan devoted himself to public service and teaching, establishing The American Musicals Project at the New- York Historical Society and the Books for Children Project at Teachers' College, and serving as a Senior Lecturer at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. A devoted aficionado of theater, music, literature, and dance, Alan instilled his love of the arts in his children and beloved granddaughters, Willa and Alice, whose mere presence brought him more joy than he'd ever anticipated. He leaves behind many loving friends, especially his children's partners, Wes Davis and Whitney Williams. The world has lost a man whose intellectual curiosity, dedication to family, and love of New York City characterized a life lived to the fullest. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Amherst College.

Dear Gail and Family,
We are grateful for the wonderful work that Alan did on behalf of New-York Historical. His creativity, his zeal for our mission, his amazing introduction of the American Musicals Project here, which lives on and thrives today, will forever place us in his debt. We are saddened by the news of this untimely loss, but feel fortunate to have been the beneficiary, during Alan's lifetime, of so much good. My deepest sympathy to you and the children of whom Alan was so proud.
