James Vickers Obituary

ODESSA James Edwin Vickers, better known as Jim to his friends and "Gramps" to his family, joined our Lord in Heaven on October 23, 2010.

James was born on April 21, 1931, to Herbert and Magaline Vickers in Idabel, OK. He served his country in Korea. Upon returning home he met the love of his life and wife, Barbara Lea Hart. They were married on June 7, 1953. His interests included the rodeo, hunting, country music and playing games with his family and friends. He served as a Boy Scout leader, coached Little League baseball, taught first aid as a member of the Red Cross, served the community as a member of the Jaycees, taught rifle safety as a member of the NRA and helped build both the church in Odessa, TX, and the campgrounds in Mayhill, N.M., as a member of the Community of Christ. James loved Mojo football and track, and he was very active in supporting his children and grandchildren in all their activities.

James was preceded in death by both parents; and his sister, Annette Buzzard.

He is survived by his brother, Roger Vickers and wife Diane of Schaumburg, IL; and his sister, Sue Taylor and husband Dale of Belleville, AK. James will be missed most by his wife, Barbara; son, Robert Vickers of Artesia, N.M.; daughter, Debby Brown and her husband Larry; son, Brian Vickers and wife Lorrie, all of Odessa; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and countless informally adopted children and grandchildren who would attend Wednesday Family Nights.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 27, 2010, at the Community of Christ Church, 2000 W. University, Odessa, TX. An informal gathering will be held November 6, 2010, in Mayhill, N.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Outreach International.

James, you and Barb were such good friends to Clem and me during our brief sojourn there on Dakota. I'll never forget the all-night pinochle
parties! Rest easy, old son.
