Dr. Mays was one of my favorite professors at DePauw. I had him for an introductory zoology course as part of my pre-med curriculum back in 1973. He was the consummate professional, but at the same time, he was a good friend of mine. He was so approachable and encouraging. I found myself modeling my interactions with my students after his, so his legacy lives on. He will be sorely missed.

As a young English prof at DePauw, I saw Charlie as a sterling example of the kind of professor I wanted to become -- kind, down to earth, committed to students, and quick with a smile. He will always be remembered and missed.
