Arthur Gruber Obituary

Arthur Gruber, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away Tuesday, November 9th, surrounded by his loving family.

Born May 3, 1919 in Pittsburgh, Pa., Arthur was the son of Frank and Rebecca Gruber. Art moved to Akron as a child and started his journey, first as a paper boy. Because of his hard work ethic, Art became an entrepreneur as the owner of Micahel's Mens's store, the Boys' Market and ultimately becoming the owner and president of Loyal Oak Swim Club and Loyal Oak Golf Course in Norton, Ohio, in which he continued an active role.

In addition to being a successful businessman, Art was an active board member of Revere Road Synagogue, where over the years he was instrumental in many fundraisers. He also was acting president of the Revere Road Men's Club, a member of the Jewish Community Center, and the Hakoah Men's Club. Art enjoyed traveling, bowling, golfing and playing cards with his special friends, but most of all treasured time with his beloved and devoted family.

Art was preceded in death by his father and mother, Rebecca and Frank Gruber; sisters, Edith and Nettie; brother, Matthew; sister-in-law, Shirley; and brother-in-law, Sam Shankler; mother and father-in-law, Antonia and Salvatore Ferrise; sisters-in-law, Isabelle, Jenny, Mary, Phyllis; brothers-in-law, Albert, Frank, John, Roy, Russell, and Jimmy.

Surviving and left to cherish his memory is Art's loving and devoted wife of 49 years, Katherine Gruber; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Dan Sutter; grandsons and the pride of his life, Kyle and Cory; sisters, Pearl and Dorthy; brother, Jacob; sister-in-law, Alice; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Theresa, Virginia, Jean, Patty, Marianne, Jenny, Rose and Molly; brothers-in-law, Mike, Tom, Sam and Antonio.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family requests, in lieu of other remembrances, if desired, donations be made in Art's memory, to Revere Road Synagogue, 646 North Revere Road, Akron, Ohio 44313. (Gordon-Flury, 330-836-7989)
