Paul McGlothlin Obituary

Paul David McGlothlin, 68, widely known as Lachlan, of Akron, died unexpectedly on January 27th.

He was proud of his six years service in the Army Military Police, including a tour of duty in Vietnam and of his 22 years service on the Akron Police Department. Lachlan was an organ donor and has now made one last gift to the community that he loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, May Swan McGlothlin and J. Claude McGlothlin, and by his sister, Joan McGlothlin Lukich. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth H. McGlothlin; his brother, Larry (Becky) McGlothlin; sister, Betty (Chuck) Seeley; his children, Cat Ellen, Jan Marie Hayes-Rennels, Erica Pelz, and Eduard Pelz; grandchildren, Megan and Kara Hayes and Jack Rennels; many nieces and nephews; the young people who have shared his home over the years, and numerous friends.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, February 5th at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Akron. Friends may call 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, a cause dear to his heart. http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/

I just heard that Paul passed. I am so sorry for his family and the community. He always had a smile, a kind word to say and was a great neighbor and friend. He was a wonderful man! I will miss him as I know his family and other friends will too!

Dear Elizabeth
I found out about Lachlan's passing just a few days ago- what a shock!

Lachlan was one of the kindest people I have ever met, opening his heart and his home to anyone and everyone. I have such fond memories of Lachlan, always being greeted warmly with a big hug and so many interesting conversations around the fire. He truly did touch many lives. Blessings to you and your family. With love, Carrol, David, and Jacob York

Uncle Dave...where does one begin? I am his niece, and I live in North Carolina.

Growing up, Uncle Dave (or should I say, Paul David), although we rarely saw him, always made me feel like a favorite. He called me "Charlie," & we talked about a variety of subjects ranging from pizza bianco (in 2004) to Dave Brubeck (he said he liked his music) to basmati rice in 2010 (he said he bought big bags of it, to eat). We even accidentally ordered the same style of eggs (with gyros!), in 2006, at another Akron restaurant. He was nice enough to send me a birthday card even after my other uncle (Louie) passed away in 2006. It hurts me incredibly that he's gone. It hurts me that Elizabeth's call that Saturday night wasn't exactly good news. But, it helps me to know that if I live like Uncle Dave (or Paul David, or Lachlan), did, I will be in the Kingdom. Thank God for Uncle Dave...Rest in peace: 1944-2013.

Paul David,

We worked the streets and Burlary unit together and an occasional Mid-night Bacci game at the Caravallese Club. We had a good time doing both and no one will forget the time you wore a Scotish Kilt to In-Service School and didn't break the dress code. Rest in Peace Brother.

To the family and friends of Dave. I am saddened to hear of the passing of Dave, as I am with all of my Viking classmates of '62. I clearly remember interesting conversations with Dave from over 50 years ago. He was interesting and a good person and a person I liked and respected. Faith be with you. William Connor Tallmadge

This week, I lost my big brother, "Dave". He had a big heart, a sharp wit, a kind & generous spirit, and a real zest for life! He loved his family dearly, and I pray that Elizabeth, Cat, Jan Marie, Erica and Ed are all able to find peace and joy in their memories of Paul.

My uncle Dave, as I called him, was the most generous soul I ever knew. I won't use an cliches to describe him, because he was unique. He blended the toughness of a cop with the wide-eyed wonder of a poet. I will miss him.

January 30, 2013

I only knew Paul, Lachlan as Dave, and Elizabeth as Betty. My memories of three years of McGlothlins at North High School are only the absolute most positive. One in the class ahead of me, one in my class and one the year behind me. That's a lot of McGlothlins! They were all ahead of their times and ahead of the rest of us. They were all smart, talented and so not full of themselves. I remember Dave as so kind, so friendly and so inclusive. He was a year ahead of me, but never made that a big deal. Larry and Betty, I am so sorry for your loss. What great memories your brother and you have left all of us.

Sincerest condolences,

In each of our lives there are people who touch us in ways that seem so minor and of little significance, but by their touch these individuals enrich our lives by so very much. Such a person was David McGlothlin in my life. His kindness, patience, and commitment to his family are testiments to his life. His loss saddens me beyond words to describe.
