DANNY (DAN H.) WILLIAMS obituary, 1927-2013, Oklahoma City, OK

DANNY WILLIAMS Obituary

April 21, 1927 - February 18, 2013 OKLAHOMA CITY Dan Hamil Williams, 85, known to most as Danny Williams or "3-D Danny," one of the most popular, well-known, radio and TV Personalities in Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2013, at his home with his devoted wife of 34 years, Maureen, at his side. He enjoyed almost eight decades of robust health and an active lifestyle most would find difficult to maintain. Danny was born April 21, 1927, in Fort Worth, TX, the son of Julius Berry and Irene Williams. He is now reunited with his parents; along with his sister, Maude Mullins; brother, J.B. Williams; his first loving wife, Marilyn; and his daughter, Suzanne Williams Clark. Danny graduated from Polytechnic High School, Fort Worth, TX in 1944, and then, later the same year, joined the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Danny attended North Texas Agricultural College in Arlington, TX before graduating from the University of Texas, Austin, with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts 1949. His major was Broadcast Journalism. It was his cousin, George Ann, who noted his enigmatic personality and outspoken charm and suggested he become a disc jockey. In 1947, he began his radio career in Texas and also met his first wife, Marilyn Maher, whom he married in May. A call from WKY Radio-TV in 1950 brought Danny to Oklahoma City. Danny was a pioneer in Oklahoma television; he produced and starred in numerous shows and was also the highest rated radio personality in the market for over 40 years. These shows became household staples. Danny loved his fans just as much as they loved him. He shared his knowledge and experience with his many co-workers over the years. Danny always had great love and respect for the Gaylord family. He would often say that working for the Gaylords helped him raise his own family. He married Maureen Townsend in July 1978, and they shared 34 entertaining and memorable years together. Danny found joy in playing at the many beautiful golf courses in Oklahoma, sharing his latest jokes and learning some new ones. Throughout the year, Danny would collect names of the best places to take his bird dogs to hunt quail and enjoy the camaraderie of his hunting buddies. Danny enjoyed riding horses in Oklahoma parades, which allowed him to be close and shake hands with his fans. All this being said, Danny always felt fortunate to share his life with Oklahomans and loved every opportunity to be with them. He was also a big fan of the OKC Thunder and was especially proud of Clay Bennett for bringing Oklahomans together in style with the team. Family always came first with Danny. He is survived by his wife, Maureen; his daughters, Shelley and her husband Manuel Flores, Shevaun and her husband Terence Heckart, and Sheridan and her husband Tom Hooper; grandchildren, Trey Clark and his wife Crystal, Elizabeth Gill and her husband Joe, Jacy Little and his wife Erin, Cheyne Little, Patrick Hooper, and Drew Hooper; great-grandchildren, Clementine Little, Oscar Little, Victoria Gill and Drake Hoffman; mother-in-law, Glennie Townsend; brother-in-law, Bud Townsend and his wife Betty; special extended relatives, Will Townsend and his wife Erica, Linc Townsend and Jim Burtschi; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, many special friends and partners in radio and TV. The family would like to thank Danny's doctors, nurses and caregivers for the excellent care; And most especially thereafter, the teamwork and dedication of the participants in the fabulous farewell tributes to the life and adventures of "3-D Danny" ? Danny Williams. The family would love for all of his fan family and friends to join for a Celebration of Danny's remarkable life at 2 p.m. today, February 24, 2013, at the Oklahoma History Center. Memorial donations may be made to the Oklahoma History Center, 800 Nazih Zuhdi Dr, Oklahoma City, OK 73105.

Goodbye old friend, you are still missed and we are left here to reminisce those good times, that you gave freely to an admiring populous that considers you both friend and family. Our days are not as bright and our hearts still ache at not hearing that infectious laugh that brightened the day. You are missed old friend. K.D. Mitchell

I was born 1962 and on his show 1964. I watch him every day after. He going to be miss by me I will never forget him.

I watched Danny as Xavier T. Willard as a little kid. then, when I was a young man I had to drive fifteen minutes east to attend my ROTC required courses during the Vietnam War days. I would often watch the sunrise and I listened to Danny on the Radio. I thought, "Man, this guy was great taste in music!" He would play "Good Golly Miss Molly" by Little Richard followed by "White House" by Cream. He kept up an interesting patter in between. Someone called him to ask where Basark, 3-d danny's old robot was and he said, "He's a planter out in the hallway." I always wanted to call him and ask him, "Now that I live in OKC, where was the Circle-4 Ranch actually located? Was it out by lake overholser?" I figured he would have said, "why, it's in the north-forty of your mind, son."
Hey Danny, I'm right behind you, Headed East, Toward the light.

I live in Omaha NE. I have happy memories of having to be at work at 6:30 am ,and I was able to get KOMA am and listening to Danny on the way to work. That radio station must have been a high WATTAGE to be able for me to tune in from that far away. That was back in the late 1990's. Danny has been gone for 5 years now. I miss him. He was the real deal--a GREAT radio personality. I'm sure he is missed by his family, friends and fans. He was unforgettable. God Rest his soul

I had the privilege of giving Danny and his beautiful wife Maureen a few ballroom dance lessons back long ago, and was able to stay in touch over the yrs by calling into the show now and then to say hi. Much to say about Danny of course, but his love for his wife is my witness to his awesomeness, dancing, even social dancing, takes more than 1 partner to make it work, and you could see both love and encouragement radiate from them both. You don't see that anymore unfortunately...

You hear it abuot the same time I do . . .

Danny Williams has been a part of the lives of Oklahomans for decades. He brought much enjoyment to my family each Saturday night hosting Championship Wrestling with Leroy McGuirk. My siblings and I were at those matches vicariously watching the likes of Bolo, Oni Wiki Wiki, Cowboy Bill Watts, Irish Mike Clancy and Haystacks Calhoun.
Then in the 60's, Mr. Williams was the voice associated with the best music ever - reaching out to bring some diversion to the war around us. Later, his humor greeted commuters and made our mornings a little brighter as we traveled to work each weekday. Thank you Mr. Williams for touching the lives of your fellow Oklahomans in so many ways for so many years. You live on in our memories.

THANK YOU Sheriff John!!and you know your friend, Danny is eternally grateful, as well! He had a lot of love & respect for you! Blessings to you & Mitzi, Maureen

Dear Williams Familly,
My deepest sympathy to you and your loved ones for his passing. I was born in Oklahoma City in 1959. I lived there for 8 years until my father was transferred to Dallas by Ford motor Co. in 1968. I allways loved Satuday Night Wrestling on Ch. 4 and the way he ended it with "Look out for flying chairs". My mother passed away this passed April. She was born in Chickasha and my father passed away in 1992. He was born in Mustang. I will allways have a fondness in my heart for my fellow Oklahomans who entertained me as a child and will forever remain a beautiful memory in my heart.

February 21, 2014

Thank you for stopping by. Just two more days of anniversary memorials.
Blessings to you and yours,

Daddy, Lots of people will remember you for all your exceptional work in radio and television. Which is quite a legacy. The online message should have read:

When you remember Danny, remember he loves you – wants you to love one another…to pass it on! He said everybody is doing the best they can – you cannot control what people think or say – just do the best you can & give it to God.
Now Danny is with the Highest Love – he will always love you. Thanks for passing it on Danny!

I grew up in the 50's & 60's listening to Danny on 'KY radio and watching him on TV. In fact for some reason the number 93 keeps coming up for me in checking accounts and other stuff over the last 10 years. We met Dan when he performed at Springlake park and other times in the mobile WKY radio van. I still enjoy looking over his web site remembering his life. It is a great tribute & I am glad he set that up. In fact, I am now in Austin, Texas where Dan started his career and I just happened to think of him again today and Googled him and learned of his passing. I left Oklahoma in 1990 but was able to listen to him a few times while he was "Keeping Oldies Music Alive" on KOMA. Thank you Danny for a great influence and much fine entertainment in my life.

About fifty years ago Danny had Roger Miller on his show as a live guest. Roger left to go to the airport, but returned to Danny's show about an hour later. Danny asked him, "Miss your plane?" Roger replied, "I sure do." Danny laughed so hard he had to play a record to regain his composure.

I first saw Danny on his TV show 3-D Danny in 1950 when I was 10 years old, and was aware of his career until I left Oklahoma in 1960 to move to Louisville, KY. We watched it on our first TV set...and black and white picture that seemed like it was about 8X10 inches. I remember we used to watch the test pattern until programming started around 4pm. Danny was a true legend of TV and Radio over his very long career. He was an extraordinary talent...RIP Dan D. Dynamo.

Your parents lived nearby when we were teenagers and we became the baby sitters for Suzanne and Shelley. When the twins were born, Marilyn called and invited us to the hospital to see the babies. It was after visiting hours so Danny told the nurse we were his sisters and we were allowed to see them. Marilyn and Danny were wonderful friends and we have many happy memories of them and their little girls. Our thoughts are with you at this sad time.

Was just thinking of Danny Williams and telling a friend about him and when I googled him found he had died. I went to school with Suzanne, his twin daughters were my younger sisters age, also Wilson Hursts kids, back in the 60's at John Marshall. We used to go to WKY television and see them. I remember waking up to Danny Williams on the radio, coming home from school to Danny Williams on t.v. My sister,Jeanie, sang on his daytime "Danny's Day" talk show. A harder working and more dedicated man could not be found. He brought lots of laughs and humor to every thing he did., I think of what they said every morning back in the early 2000's. "Mr. William's has left the building." I am sure he is busy on the other side. God bless his family....he is fine!
