John David Moss Jr.

John Moss Obituary

John David Moss, Jr., 70, of Loganville, Georgia, passed away Monday, February 11, 2013, after a long and courageous struggle with pulmonary fibrosis. Mr. Moss was the son of John David Moss and Susan Shelnutt Moss, both of Athens. Paternal grandparents were R.L. Moss of Athens, and Ann Cubbege Moss of Macon. Maternal grandparents were Harold Lee Shelnutt and Eileen Harper Shelnutt, of Athens.
Raised in a military family, Mr. Moss traveled widely as a child, completing his high school education in Sumter, South Carolina. He earned his BS degree in accounting from Duke University in 1965, and later earned a Masters' degree while serving with the United States Air Force through the University of Maryland. Upon graduation from Duke University in 1965, Mr. Moss was commissioned an officer in the Air Force, and served with distinction in both air and ground operations in the Southeast Asia War, earning the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation medal, and numerous other awards and commendations, both foreign and domestic. Before leaving the Air Force as a captain in 1976, he served as a missile launch officer in the Minuteman II program. As a civilian, he worked in manufacturing engineering and management for a variety of companies. In latter years, he was employed by IBM Business Consulting, and then was in private practice as a business consultant until his retirement.
Mr. Moss was a skilled pilot, holding commercial multi-engine rating, was for many years involved at the amateur level in automobile road racing, and was an avid touring motorcyclist of vast experience. Mr. Moss was devoted to his family, and is survived by his wife of forty-five years, the former Judith Jahn, a native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, daughter Jenifer of Huntsville, Alabama, son Kyle of Round Rock, Texas, daughter Sara of Orlando, Florida, brother Jeffrey of Buckhead, Georgia, sister Kelly Moss Chitwood of Rutland, Vermont, three grandchildren, and numerous extended family members. He was preceded in death by a younger brother, Richard Lee Moss, an Army medic who died in Vietnam in 1968.
In addition to his commitment to, and love for, his family, Captain and later, Mr. Moss, typified commitment to Duty, Honor, and Country, honoring a family military heritage unbroken back to the Revolutionary War. He will be forever remembered by those who knew him as the rock upon whom all could depend, a commanding figure, known for clear thinking and direct action, a very private person, and yet a very compassionate, loving and generous human being.
By his expressed personal wishes, no local services will be held. Mr. Moss' ashes will be interred with military honors at a date to be determined in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
